Hope Notes 8/25/11
Dear Friends of Hope~
"Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord…" Ps 114:7 Well, our earth was trembling earlier this week, that's for sure! You know what I was thinking? I was thinking that, no matter how much I wanted it to stop; there wasn't a thing I could do to make it happen! There was never a clearer example of how very little control I have over anything. It is God who sets the moon and stars in place, who holds back the seas, who gives light to the sun, and who keeps our earth firm beneath our feet. How could we have any illusions that we then have control over the events of our day to day lives? I guess I kind of liked being reminded of Who is ultimately in charge, and boy, am I glad He is!
SUNDAY MESSAGE
8/28 – An Opportunity to Go Backwards (2 Samuel 4)
"One step forward and two steps back…" No matter how familiar that saying is, it doesn't seem like a good recipe for making progress. A net move backwards almost never feels like a good thing. But as we walk through our lives as believers, we are continually offered (through temptation) an opportunity to go backwards. Somehow, the master deceiver makes it seem like going backwards is desirable. But of course, it isn't. In this story, David is faced with a very similar situation to the death of Saul. And he again has the opportunity to act in his flesh instead of acting by faith in the Lord. A huge part of growing in our faith is facing these opportunities to go backwards and rejecting them!
UPCOMING SPECIAL SERVICES
9/11 Memorial
This will be a day to reflect and remember what happened to our country, as well as what God taught us through the events of that day. Bob Rice will share his testimony about his own personal experience during the months he was at Ground Zero. He has some items to display from NYC, the Pentagon, and Shenksville.
Many people may be looking for something of substance to do on this day to commemorate the events of 9/11. If we keep our eyes open, God may use us to invite anyone who will need this type of memorial. And for all of us, it is a good time to remember how God walked with us through those days of chaos and turmoil.
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE? Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at Prayer Team with any questions.
BIBLE READING FOR AUGUST – 1THESSALONIANS
We all need Hope. In this book, the apostle Paul gives us a slightly different take on the word hope. The ultimate hope is that Jesus is coming back. Does that mean we hope He comes, but we're not sure? Far from it! The kind of hope Paul talks about in this letter is a rock solid assurance that God always keeps His promises, including His promise that Jesus will return to earth in order to reward all those who live for Him.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Dates will be weeknights in the weeks before 10/2, with exact dates and times to be announced soon!

SMALL GROUP KICK OFF
September 18
Small Groups are vital to the body of Hope. We are a family and need to stay connected with one another. Since that's a little hard to do just seeing each other after church or Bible study, we need to get plugged in to a Small Group. Hope Notes 8/18/11
Dear Friends of Hope~
Our dog, Olive, has a habit that happens every time I take her for a walk through our yard and into our woods. When we turn around to head back, she frantically searches for a stick and then carries it all the way back to the house. I don't know why she does this; I doubt that she knows why she does this! But it made me think about my own habits. Usually, bad habits are mindless. Good habits are mindful. Bad habits are hard to break. Good habits can slip away easily. Bad habits seem to establish themselves overnight, while good habits take time and dedication to become ingrained. Think about how easy it is to skip a Bible reading here and there, or to forget to pray and ask our Lord for guidance. We miss church once, then twice, and then before you know it, a month has gone by. Let's make a concentrated effort to be mindful of our good habits and see if we can't let some of those bad ones disappear!
SUNDAY MESSAGE –
8/21 – The End of a Grudge (3:22-39)
The idea of "getting even" seems to make so much sense. Someone has wronged us, and we need to wrong them in return to set things right. But the Bible tells us that this doesn't make us even – it makes us wrong. Instead, we are instructed to turn to God for justice and healing from the hurts in our life. This truth is illustrated in the story of David. His general, Joab, is looking for revenge and finds a way to get it. But David mourns the loss – instead of seeing this as justice, he sees it as wrong piled on top of wrong. We need to let God open our eyes to the way He sees revenge so that we are not easily deceived into thinking it is something that will help us.

Hope Notes 8/11/11
Dear Friends of Hope~
Our worship service this Sunday is going to be the same, yet different. We will still be lifting our voices in song to praise Him, but this time our worship team will be made up of some of our Young Adults group! Pastor Mark will still stand before us with a message, but this week we won't be studying a chapter from the Bible; instead our pastor will share with us some very special things God has been laying on his heart.
SUNDAY MESSAGE – HEART TO HEART
Pastor Mark shares what's on his heart with us this Sunday, particularly about the main goal we set this year – emphasizing our ministry to young people. We have some specific challenges to meet and we need to all be on the same page as to how best to tackle them. When God stirs things up in our pastor's heart, you can be sure He is ready to do amazing things at Hope!

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY
7:00 – 8:15 pm
Throughout the summer, we will be treated to a variety of speakers and worship on Wednesday evenings. It is always a blessing to hear the things that God has laid on another's heart as they come and share. It's important that we "do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Heb 10:25) Sometimes it's a little harder to get to church mid-week in the summer, but we need to come and support each other. Get ready to be blessed! Next week – Pat Harkin.
WOMEN'S PRAYER GROUP
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Prayer Room at church. All women are invited to attend.
