Hope Notes 10/27/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
This is going to be an awesome Sunday!  Compelled is going to lead us in worship, Dave Hallahan will be sharing with us, and then we get to have a luncheon and fellowship together!  "Just who IS this Dave?" you ask.  On the church side of things, we have been praying together as a body for God's leading in our church and in Dave's life as we continue to move forward with bringing Dave on as our Youth Pastor.  On the personal side, I've had the pleasure of knowing Dave since he was about four years old.  He and my daughter grew up in the same church and we have a long friendship with his family.  I can tell you that he is a young man with a rock solid faith and a huge heart for youth.  Perhaps that is because Dave is still a big kid himself!  I remember hearing Dave speak back when he was "youth" himself, and so I am super excited to hear this young man lay out for us just how God has been working in his life these last couple of years.

SUNDAY MESSAGE
Waiting on the Lord – Dave Hallahan
How do YOU wait on the Lord?  Do you wait patiently, expectantly, with hope and assurance?  Or do you wait with great sighs of impatience, doubting that God will move in your life, and certainly not move on your time schedule?  Waiting can sometimes be difficult, but it doesn't have to be.  This Sunday, we get to hear what God has been doing in Dave's life over the past few years and find out what Dave has learned about waiting!
Please Note:  We will be taking a love offering to show our support for the band, Compelled.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE? Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website,
www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at Prayer Team with any questions.

BIBLE READING FOR OCTOBER – JOHN
How would you respond if someone were to ask you, "Who was Jesus and what should He mean to me?"  If you're looking for answers to that question, look no further than the Gospel of John.  Written by "the disciple whom Jesus loved", the Gospel has one main purpose:  to foster faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY
7:00 – 8:15
You don't want to miss our study of 1Corinthians!  The Christians at Corinth were like so many of us today – they knew Christ, but they still needed His cleansing! Gathering together midweek to dig into God's Word is key in staying connected to our church family and to our Lord.

WEDNESDAY EVENING CHILDREN'S PROGRAM
Our Children's Program runs at the same time as Bible study.  We currently offer classes for 2-3 year olds, 4-5 year olds, and 1st thru 5th graders.

We now have a list of volunteers for our nursery.  Thank you to these ladies who are willing to step up and serve where there is a need!

YOUNG ADULTS
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at 7:30 in the Youth Room at church.  Anyone who has graduated high school up to their early thirties is welcome.  See Pastor Mark or Dana for more information.
Please Note:  Our next Young Adults meeting (11/7) will be our first with child care provided!  If anyone in this age group has been waiting for us to set up child care so they can come out and be a part, please come out on 11/7.  We will have a schedule that night so everyone can volunteer to take a week and we can organize childcare as an ongoing part of our Young Adults meeting.

WOMEN'S PRAYER GROUP
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Prayer Room at church.  All women are invited to attend.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWSHIP

YOUTH NEWS

YOUTH GROUP - YOUTH PASTOR UPDATE

Please pray with us as we explore the possibility of having Dave Hallahan be our youth pastor.  We're asking our entire church to lift this in prayer during the month of October.  With our youth group on hiatus, we are trusting that God will lead in our church and in Dave's life as we look for His guidance in this situation.  It is exciting to think that God may be answering our prayers and moving us forward to a focused and powerful ministry to our teens.

SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICE & LUNCH – THIS SUNDAY

October 30th

We will have the privilege of having Dave speak for our morning service.  This will be an amazing Sunday, because in addition to having Dave share, we'll have the privilege of having Compelled come and lead worship for us that morning!  You won't want to miss a minute of the service.  Following the service, we're inviting everyone to stick around for a simple lunch together.  We're asking each church family to help us with this lunch by bringing a soup, a chili, or some sandwiches.  And of course, we'll need those desserts as well!  You want to be sure and be here for this so that you don't miss out on the blessings (or the food)!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MOVING HELP NEEDED – THIS SATURDAY
Saturday, October 29 – approx. 10:00 am

John and Dawn Brazelis are moving from their home in Glassboro to another home right in Glassboro and would be grateful for a few helping hands.  Strong men are appreciated!  Call John or Dawn at 856-956-6923 for further details.

PARTNER'S BUSINESS MEETING
Sunday, November 6th

We will be having a church business meeting for all of our partners after the service on Sunday November 6.  We will be proposing to take Dave Hallahan as our youth pastor, and to pay him part time.  Please continue to pray through this issue as we finish up the month of October and prepare for our meeting.

NOMINATIONS FOR DEACON AND ELDER CANDIDATES
We need for our Partners to nominate Partners for these positions.  Nomination forms are in the Resource Room.  Informational sheets on Deacons and Leadership/Elder positions are located right next to the Nomination forms. Forms must be turned in to Pastor Mark by November 6th.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
Practice for our Children's Christmas Program is being held on Sundays during the worship service.  Once again we are inviting the 6th graders to join our program to help us make it even better!  We all love to have the kids on stage for the program (which this year will be on December 18th), so please make sure they are at church every Sunday to practice so that they can be a part of the program!

CHRISTMAS EVE
Please take note that there will be no Christmas Eve service this year.  With Christmas falling on a Sunday, it's just logistically too difficult to do a service like that on Saturday evening followed by another service on Christmas morning.  We'll simply have one very special service on Sunday morning!

THANKSGIVING BASKET NEEDS
We are asking the body of Hope to be our eyes and ears in order to help the Needs Team come up with a list of families here at church who could use a little help with some Thanksgiving food.  If you know of anyone who could benefit from a Thanksgiving basket, please see someone on the Needs Team (Mike Hartwell, Lorraine Otis, Karen Jones, Al Lewis, Charlotte Zediker).  Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY
Thanksgiving Baskets
We are beginning to gather the makings of a yummy Thanksgiving Dinner for families in need.  Please bring cranberry sauce, stuffing, canned sweet or white potatoes, rice or potato side dish mixes, canned french fried onion rings, etc.  We already have plenty of vegetables.  We can also take some refrigerator/freezer items such as frozen turkeys or Pillsbury biscuits.
Note:  Donations can be put in the designated spot in the back of the auditorium.  All donations must be brought in by Sunday November 13th.

Tuckahoe Rd.)  This huge Christmas craft fair attracts people from all over.  Volunteer to man the table and talk to craft-goers about our church.  We don't expect you to be an expert in everything, but just to be willing to come and talk to people about your experience with HCF.  Volunteers can be teenagers and up!  Sign up by one hour time slots on the sign-up sheet in the resource room.  Whether you sign up for one hour or the whole day; any time you can give is greatly appreciated!  Also looking for volunteers willing to set up the table and take it down.  See Ellen Lewis with questions.

MEALS MINISTRY

Hope Notes Correction

Our Young Adults Outreach was incorrectly listed as October 30th.  The following is the correct information.  So sorry!

YOUNG ADULTS OUTREACH
Saturday, October 29

Our Young Adults will be making and distributing sandwiches in Camden.  See Jess St.Petery with questions.

Hope Notes 10/20/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Hey – have you checked out our new sign on the front of the building?  Our logo of the outstretched hands is displayed on a plaque that lights up at night.  It looks great during the day, but it really shines (no pun intended) at night!  Of course, the hands symbolize reaching out to others, lending a helping hand, offering support, extending compassion, and encouraging one another.  But the light that pours out from behind the hands at night, that warm golden glow; to me that symbolizes Christ's love and how we are to let our light "shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven". Mat 5:16   The sign also illuminates our walkway, so that we do not stumble and fall just as, you guessed it, God's love and His Word shines light on our path.  That's none too shabby of an accomplishment for one little sign!  Be sure and check it out before you walk into church this week.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

10/23 – Dream Big – 2 Samuel 7:1-17

Have you ever thought about how big God's plans are for you?  Maybe you are convinced that God doesn't have anything significant for you to do, or maybe you just don't care what God wants.  But the Bible tells us that God has amazing plans for each of us.  And it only makes sense, right?  Look at the vastness of what He created in our universe, and even in just our world.  And Jesus talks about giving life – but not just life – life 'abundantly'.  That means overflowing and uncontainable.  God really has huge plans for us.  But what about our heart for Him?  Do we have any passion or dream for God's kingdom?  David did!  And David expresses his desire to build a house for God.  God's response tells us so much about our gracious Heavenly Father.  Let's see how God responds to those who dream big for Him!

Hope Notes 10/13/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Don't the trees just seem more beautiful in the fall?  They show off such a variety of brilliant colors; not just the same old green.  I think people's spiritual lives often reflect the "same old green".  We get in such a spiritual rut that our walk with the Lord becomes dull and monotonous.  We can't let that happen!  People are naturally drawn to the vibrant hues of autumn.  We need to keep things fresh, new, and "colorful"; displaying our colors so that people far from Him are drawn to Him, just as He intended.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

10/16 – A Second Chance to Get It Right – 2 Samuel 6:12-23

Nobody gets it right every time.  There are people who would like us to believe that they do, but they don't.  And our own personal experience is clear enough – we are very prone to failure.  Did you ever wonder what God's view is of all our mistakes?  As we continue in our story in David's life, we can see how God offers us a second chance.  David had made quite a mistake – even costing one man his life!  But God left the door open for David to try again.  David took great joy in this chance to do it right, even stirring up jealousy and anger in his wife.  As we see how David got a second chance, we can be encouraged that God is the God of 'another chance'.  So no matter how many times you've blown it, there is hope for you!  Today, you can begin again, and do it right!

Make sure to mark your calendars right now so you don't miss out on the blessings (or the food)!!

Hope Notes 10/6/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Wow – all I had to do was read Pastor Mark's first line in the message description and what entered my mind was "If it's the thought that counts, then imagine what God must have been thinking when He gave us the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ!".  What WAS He thinking?  He knew what a sinful and weak bunch of humanity we would turn out to be.  He knew we certainly weren't going to do anything to DESERVE that gift.  He knew what that gift would cost Him.  And yet, He chose to give it to us anyway!  "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?" Psalm 8:3-4  How appropriate that we remember that gift with Communion this Sunday.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

10/9 – Good Motives Fall Flat – 2 Samuel 6:1-11

COMMUNION

We've probably all heard that, when it comes to gifts, "it's the thought that counts."  But is that true?  Maybe it should be true, but there are plenty of instances where there is no doubt that the thought didn't count for much.  Still, there's something inside us that wants this concept to be true.  And when it comes to life, or to spiritual matters, we really hope that sincerity and good motives will be enough.  But what we'll see in the story of David today is that the best intentions do not offset wrong actions.  We are definitely in a better position to learn from mistakes if we have good intentions, but it does not mean that what we do will automatically work.  David learned this lesson the hard way, and God recorded this story so that we could all learn from his experience instead of having to learn it on our own.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE? Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

We don't have a nursery as of yet, but we are praying that the Lord will move in some of our folks to organize childcare for our infants on a rotating basis.

WOMEN'S PRAYER GROUP
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Prayer Room at church.  All women are invited to attend.

YOUNG ADULTS
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at 7:30 in the Youth Room at church.  Anyone who has graduated high school up to their early thirties is welcome.  See Pastor Mark or Dana for more information.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWSHIP

SMALL GROUPS
Small Group study sheets are out and in the back of the auditorium.  As our Small Groups begin meeting, we'll take a look at how the Bible emphasizes God's plan for us to grow and be healthy through relationships within our spiritual family.  Anyone still looking for a Small Group to plug into can see Damon Briggs; he will help you get connected!

LADIES FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON – THIS SATURDAY
Saturday, October 8th 12:00 – 3:00!
All "ladies" ages 13 and up – bring a friend and come enjoy each other's company!
This is our opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, and just reconnect as the women of Hope.  We will be having a special devotion by Linda Phillips.  Linda is the sister of Joy, our missionary in Africa.  See Liz Johnson or Lois Hartwell with any questions.

As part of this process, we are planning the following two special Sundays:

YOUTH HANG OUT AT PASTOR MARK'S
October 16th

After the Sunday service, we are inviting all our teens to come to Pastor Mark and Dana's house to hang out and have some fun with Dave and his fiancée Leah.  We'll provide pizza for lunch and, weather permitting; we'll play some games in the backyard.  What we need is for every teen that is able to come out and join us.  Pick up time for parents is 3:30pm at Pastor Mark and Dana's home (6 East Ave, Clayton, NJ 08312).  Note:  We will need a couple of vehicles after the service to help us get the teens to Clayton!

SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICE & LUNCH

October 30th

We will have the privilege of having Dave speak for our morning service.  This will be an amazing Sunday, because in addition to having Dave share, we'll have the privilege of having Compelled come and lead worship for us that morning!  You won't want to miss a minute of the service.  Following the service, we're inviting everyone to stick around for a simple lunch together.  We're asking each church family to help us with this lunch by bringing a soup, a chili, or some sandwiches.  And of course, we'll need those desserts as well!  Make sure to mark your calendars right now so you don't miss out on the blessings (or the food)!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

DISTRACTION FREE ZONE
We are asking your help in keeping our worship service as free from distractions as possible in order to better focus our hearts and minds on what the Lord has for us.  Please be sure all cell phones are silenced and, if you need to get up during the service, please sit in the back or on the side of the auditorium.  These simple things can go far in giving our worship experience the reverence it deserves.  Thank you!

SPILLS STRATEGY
Oops!  Did your drink get knocked over during service?  Never fear – all you need to do is slip out the back and grab a greeter.  He/she will take care of it for you!  If you can't find a greeter, we do have a bucket with some towels in the storage closet out in the lobby.  Just grab a towel or two and throw it down on the spill.  We can deal with the intense clean up after service.

NOMINATIONS FOR DEACON AND ELDER CANDIDATES
This Sunday Pastor Mark will have the forms for partners to nominate partners for these roles.  More information regarding the process is on the forms.  Forms must be turned in to Pastor Mark by November 6th.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
The children will be practicing on Sundays this year.  Practices will begin for the elementary (1st-6th grades) on September 25th.  We're again inviting the 6th graders to join our program to help us make it even better.  Our Toddler and Pre-school classes will be working together and will begin practicing on October 9th.  We all love to have the kids on stage for the program (which this year will be on December 18th), so please make sure they are at church each Sunday to practice so that they can be a part of the program that day

Note:  Donations can be put in the wicker basket that's to the left of the kitchen door.
