Hope Notes 6/28/12

Dear Friends of Hope~

Summer has definitely arrived and it's the perfect time to reach out and connect with our Hope families!  Take advantage of the warmer weather and plan a barbeque, some kind of water activity, or maybe a picnic in the park.  If you're not a fan of the heat then how about taking in a movie with another family or inviting them over for a game night – all air conditioned, of course!  Hope is a place where relationships are important; let's make sure we take the time to nurture the ones we already have and to open our hearts to new ones!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

7/1 – Costly Worship (2 Samuel 24:18-25)

COMMUNION

Being a bargain hunter is theoretically supposed to help your bottom line.  Finding stuff for less somewhere means saving money.  We can get so programmed to look for the lowest price that we begin to believe that we should always try to spend as little as possible.  But some things in life are costly on purpose.  The freedoms we enjoy as a nation were very costly – and remain so.  And when we worship the Lord, we should not be giving Him just our leftovers or what is convenient.  But how often do we do exactly that – offering God only what would cost us little.  David in this story makes a statement that he will not offer God something that cost him nothing – even though he has the opportunity to do so.  How passionate are we about the sacrifices it takes to bring true and deep worship to our amazing God?

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at Prayer Team with any questions.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY PRAYER TIME

All Sunday School and Nursery teachers/helpers are invited to come join us in the Toddler Classroom every Sunday from 9:40 – 9:45 for a time of prayer before the children begin arriving.

BIBLE READING FOR JULY – COLOSSIANS
Paul wrote to warn the Christians at Colosse about the false teaching that was infiltrating the church.  It said that Christ was good, but that to reach real spiritual maturity you needed to believe certain worldly philosophies or contact a certain angel.  Paul rejected all of that.  He warned the Colossians of the danger of trusting worldly wisdom or institutions and instead encouraged them to focus on Jesus Christ and His saving work.  Jesus is the Creator, fully divine and fully the head of the church.  He's all we ever need.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWSHIP

NEW FAMILIES FELLOWSHIP

August 26th

Our Leadership Team is hosting a New Families luncheon here at Hope for families who have begun attending within the past year. So many new families have been visiting lately that we want to set aside some time specifically to get to know one another.  We value relationships and are excited to have this opportunity to make these connections by fellowshipping with each other.  A signup sheet will be out near the end of July; we're just giving you a head start to go home and clear your calendars so you don't miss out on this event!

MEN'S BREAKFAST

Second Saturday of Every Month

8:30 am

Come and join us for a delicious breakfast and a good time of fellowship/sharing with the men of Hope.  Feel free to bring a friend!  Open to men 18 and older.  If anyone would like to help set-up and/or prepare, we meet in the kitchen at 7:00 am. See Bob Rice with any questions.

SMALL GROUPS

It's really not too early to start praying and think about forming a small group in September.  Our church depends on the connections, caring, and spiritual interaction that happens in a small group.  Our goal is for every adult to be a part of one!  More specific info will be given at our Small Group kickoff on September 9th.  In the meantime, we'd like everyone to be praying and seeking the Lord's direction in anticipation of this important part of our church family life!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

COMPASSION FAST OFFERING

This is the Sunday we will be taking our offering for the Compassion Fast we've been doing throughout the month of June.  All money collected will go to families in need.

MOVE UP SUNDAY

All kids who are moving up a grade should transition to their new class.  They need to be in whatever class corresponds with the grade they will enter at school in the fall. (Kids going into 1st grade in the fall should move into the 1st-3rd grade class, etc).

JUNE GIVING

Our giving for the month of June averaged $4365 per week.  This is well below the annual weekly target of $5000 per week.  Our actual year to date average is now $4940, which is below our target for the first time this year. We are thankful for each person's faithful sacrifice and commitment to giving to God's work at Hope, and we are praying together as a church that the Lord will provide all the giving that we need for what He has called us to do for His Kingdom!

SAINTS PRISON MINISTRY

Still have a need…………

Did you know we have our own prison missionaries right here at Hope?  Anne and Jim Jefferson, and Bill McGinness are actively involved in the Saints Prison Ministry.  Their mission is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners through athletics and to provide them with opportunities for spiritual growth.  They compete against inmate teams in softball, basketball, soccer and women's volleyball, and then present the Gospel to them right on the playing field.  They need to raise their own support in order to participate in this ministry.  Please consider helping them out with your prayers and any financial contribution you can give. Bill specifically still needs $400.00.   Checks should be made payable to the individual.

LOVE & RESPECT MARRIAGE CONFERENCE

October 26-27

We're planning a Marriage Conference right here at Hope in October on Friday night and Saturday morning.  It will be a low cost and powerful way to build each and every marriage in our church.  This is an opportunity you do not want to miss out on.  Mark your calendars now and look for more information to follow!  "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." Eph 5:33

Hope Notes 6/21/12

Dear Friends of Hope~

I read a quote from the French poet, Charles Baudelaire, and cannot get it out of my mind.  He said, "The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he did not exist."  Isn't that scary?  How many people do you know who simply choose to believe that Satan isn't real?  As if not believing will make it true.  God's Word tells us in no uncertain terms that he IS real.  1Peter 5:8 says, "……your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."  There are many other verses that support Satan's existence in this world, but for those who do not believe the Bible is the Word of God, that evidence makes no difference.  It makes me so sad to realize that the enemy has indeed succeeded in persuading countless numbers of people that he isn't real and is no threat to them.  I honestly don't know what to do about that, other than to pray that their hearts will be opened to the Truth.  I guess I'm just sharing this with you all because it has been heavy on my heart.  Thanks for listening!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

6/24 – Taking Inventory of Human Strength (2 Samuel 24:1-17)

When a personal crisis hits our lives, we probably ask this question first: "What can I do about this?"  Depending on our answer (whether there is indeed anything we can do), our experience can get very desperate very quickly.  Basically, what we are doing naturally is taking an inventory of our ability to address the problem humanly.  But this question misses the more important issue.  If we believe that God is in charge of our lives and that He can do anything, then moments of crisis are probably purposely more than we can handle in our human ability.  David takes steps in this episode to find out how much human strength was at his disposal – and he does it in such a public way that it becomes a stumbling block for the whole nation.  God deals severely with David so that everyone will know that it was never human ability that did anything of note in David's rise or reign.

BIBLE READING FOR JUNE – 2 PETER
Our time on earth is limited, and Peter challenges us to take seriously God's call to live a life pleasing to Him rather than the world's decree of "live for today – go for the gusto".  There's a good reason to do so – the day is coming when the heavens will disappear, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and everything in it will be laid bare.  "Since everything around us is going to melt away," Peter asks, "what holy, godly lives you should be living!  You should look forward to that day and hurry it along."

COMPASSION FAST

Join us in a Compassion Fast during the month of June!  Here's the plan - we're asking anyone interested to set aside something for the month of June that costs them money - and instead to save that money toward giving to those in need.  On the first Sunday of July, we'll collect whatever people have saved and then find some needy families to help out.  In the mean time, fasting like this is a great reminder of how we've been blessed and a great opportunity to pray for spiritual needs in the lives of others.  So please consider being a part of this powerful opportunity to be a blessing to others by sacrificing.

Hope Notes 6/13/12

Dear Friends of Hope~

Don't panic – it's not Thursday already!  I'm just a day early because I'll be away for the next few days and I KNOW you wouldn't want to miss a week of Hope Notes! Whenever I'm away from our Sunday worship, it always makes me feel a bit disconnected.  That's how important it is to be there every week.  It's not that we get a black mark for being absent; it's more that we miss hearing what's going on at Hope and what's going on with our church family.  We miss the uplifting music during worship and we miss hearing God speak through Pastor Mark's message.  All that adds up to that sense of disconnection.  So, if you are not away, make it a point to be at church on Sundays!  You don't want to miss out on what God has in store for you!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

6/17 – FATHER'S DAY

Being a dad is an amazing calling – one that requires the help and strength of the Lord to fulfill.  Each year, our culture sets aside this day to celebrate and honor our fathers.  On this Father's Day, we're going to have the blessing of experiencing a very special service.  Three of our leadership men will be sharing what the Lord has been teaching them in their roles as fathers, and we will be asking God to use what He puts on their hearts to teach each of us as well.  Let's remember to honor and pray for all our dads as well as we celebrate Father's Day together

Hope Notes 6/7/12

Dear Friends of Hope~

Just about every day I walk the pup down the back of our property and into our woods (I won't mention what it is she's doing back there!).  I've noticed that she never gets too far ahead of me without looking back to check and see if I'm still there.  Sometimes she will sit and wait until I get closer before she proceeds any further.  I guess she likes the security of knowing I'm nearby.  Aren't we as believers fortunate to have a God who is always right there with us?  A God who promises He will "never leave us or forsake us" (Deut 31:6).  A God who is right beside us whether we are "up to the heavens or in the depths" (Psalm 139:8) and whose eyes "saw us in our mother's womb" (Psalm 139:16).  There is nowhere we can go where He is not walking with us. We never need to check and see if He is there. We have the assurances of Scripture that tell us our God is omnipresent.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

6/10 – A Legacy Worth Leaving (2 Samuel 23)

What words would best describe your life?  The patterns we live and the reputations we hold resonate everywhere we go and in every life we touch.  Our influence can be positive, healthy and spiritual.  Or it can be negative, poisoned, and earthly.  As we get to the summary of some of David's life, this chapter really describes the legacy he leaves behind.  He is known as a man who did what was right and trusted God to deal with the results.  And his men had reputations for acting in uncommon bravery and valor.  Basically, David lived a life of visible and meaningful faith.  Is that the pattern people see in us?

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS

Wednesday Evenings 7:00 – 8:15

We will be putting our study of 1Corinithians aside for spring and breaking into individual classes.  The groups offered are shown below.  It's not too late to jump into a group!  See the teacher listed in order to get a book. Childcare is provided.

Men's Group (Mike Hartwell) – Using the book The Christian Atheist, we will look at how we say we believe in God and identify ourselves as His flowers, but act like we don't believe He exists.  This will be a challenge and a powerful call to courage and faith in the challenges we face as men.

Ladies' Group (Dana Ott and Lois Hartwell) - This group will be digging through the struggles and weights that face women who are believers and yet are challenged by the attacks on their hearts.  The book we will be using is called An Untroubled Heart.

Defending the Faith (Steve and Karen Jones) - This group will be based on the book The Case for Faith and will explore the logic and 'proofs' behind our faith.  For anyone who has ever wished that they could make a reasonable argument to those who question their faith, this class is for you!

Real Christianity (Pastor Mark) - This group will be looking at the parable of the prodigal son through the book The Prodigal God.  In this book, the difference between religion and real Christianity is explored.  It will challenge your understanding of God's love, of the good things we do and of the bad things we do.

WEDNESDAY EVENING CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

7:00 – 8:15
We currently offer Nursery (newborn– 2 yrs), Preschool (3-5 yrs), and Elementary (1st – 5th grade).  We will take a break from kids programs on Wed for July and August to make room for VBS and to give our volunteers a little break.
