Hope Notes 10/31/13

Dear Friends of Hope ~

I'm really looking forward to this Saturday when we TURN OUR CLOCKS BACK!  No, not because we get to sleep a little longer; I just love it when it gets dark earlier!  My family thinks I'm weird, but eating dinner with darkness blanketing the windows just seems so much cozier.  They laugh at me because I am suddenly obsessed with baking bread and making hot chocolate! So, the 'extra' hour of sleep does nothing for me, but that extra hour of darkness is heaven! Now if you forget to turn your clock back, when you arrive at Hope an hour early you will find yourself treated to the very first steaming cup of coffee from our coffee bar, the joy of listening to our worship team as they practice, and some time to join in with our prayer team as they lift our morning service up in prayer.  Not a bad way to start your morning…………..even if you did forget to turn your clock back!

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

November 3 – Only Believe (John 3:9-18)

How much do you believe that you'll be here tomorrow?  If you think about that question, it really illustrates the way believing affects your actions, thoughts, and plans.  If you actually believe that you'll be here tomorrow (and thereafter), you plan and think accordingly.  But if you did not believe, you'd certainly adjust how you spent your time.  As Jesus talked to Nicodemus, He keeps coming back to 'believing' as the essential element to eternal life.  It really isn't our good works (or lack of them) that determine our relationship with God.  Let's make sure we really believe this truth – for ourselves and others!

SATURDAY EVENING SERVICES

We will be having service on Saturday evenings most every week through December.  However, there are a few times where there will be no Saturday evening service!  Here they are: November 24th, and December 15th.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

9:30 – 9:35

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 9:30 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Pat Harkin at Prayer Team with any questions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

OCTOBER GIVING UPDATE

We averaged $4538 per week in giving for the month of October which brings our annual average down to $5155.  This remains well below our weekly annual giving target of $5400 per week.  Please pray with us for God to open each of our hearts to His direction on giving as we've been blessed.  While money and numbers have never been a big deal at Hope, we know that we share together in every challenge and calling, so let's meet this one together!

HOPE CONNECTS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

If you enjoy socializing and connecting through comments, tweets, and 'likes', you can now add Hope to the mix!  How great to be able to integrate our church and our spiritual journey together into the fabric of those interactions!  It's as simple as 'liking' our facebook page (Hope Christian Fellowship), following our twitter account (HCF_Woodbury), and adding your input/feedback to the discussions going on.  As a bonus, it helps us be public in our witness and testimony about our faith and our church.  God just may use it to bring others to Him and to be an encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ.  For sure it will help us speak into each other's lives as we walk through our daily routines.

NOMINATIONS

Forms are due this Sunday, November 3rd!

Partners should nominate men for elder candidates (Leadership Team) that they believe have demonstrated spiritual leadership at Hope and have the spiritual qualifications listed in the Bible.  We're looking for help on our Deacon Team so let's nominate men and women who have a passion to serve the body of Christ and who will help us function well as a team.  Please remember that only partners can nominate. Be sure to pick up a form for a complete explanation of not only the process, but also the requirements. You can see Pastor Mark with any questions and give him your completed form.

Hope Notes 10/24/13

Dear Friends of Hope ~

OK – let's see how well you all follow instruction.  I want you to read the description of Pastor Mark's message before you read this opening!  Go ahead, I'll wait………….……..all done?  Good – now see if you don't agree with me that celebrating communion on the Sunday that our message is all about being born again isn't the best thing ever?!  Talk about a life changing event!  Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is what made it all possible for us to be born again.  His life given to us as a ransom for our sin.  His death brings us life, if we choose to accept Him.  Being reminded of the magnitude of His sacrifice should spur us on to make SURE that transformation (of being born again) is evident in our lives!  It's not a random coincidence that the message and communion coincide.  God is the master of connections like that!

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

October 27 –Born Again (John 3:1-8)

Communion

Life changing events…….. How many have you had?  Maybe going off to college changed you, living on your own for the first time.  Or maybe it was when you met the love of your life – or when you had your first child.  There is something about that moment when everything seems completely different.  Jesus talks about what it means to be a child of God.  He uses the description 'born again' to explain what he means.  If we have experienced this eternally life changing event, Jesus says it will change everything about us.  Maybe it is time for us to take a look at whether we've been born again, and if we have, how long it has been since that transformation was evident in our lives.

Hope Notes 10/17/13

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Every time our dog Olive wakes up, she searches through the house until she finds all her 'peeps'.  She will run through each room and sniff at each closed door until she finds us.  Even when the door is shut, she can tell if one of us is in there, and she won't rest until we come out.  She's not satisfied with finding just one of us; she needs to find ALL of us!  Whenever she finds each one, she is overcome with tail wagging, jumping bean joy!  Only then does she settle down and go about her doggie business.  Luke 19:10 tells us "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."  Now I don't think God is sniffing around looking for us – He knows exactly where we are – but He will seek us with unrelenting tenacity.  In His love, he pursues us even as we run from Him.  His desire is that we be 'found'.  Did you know that Christianity is the only religion where we serve a God who reaches out to us; we don't have to try and look for Him, or work to get to Him, we only need to respond to Him.  I am so thankful that we serve a God who loves us enough to seek us out before we even begin to think of seeking Him!

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

October 20 – Cleaning House (John 2:12-25)

Wherever you live, doesn't it seem like clutter is inevitable?  As we get comfortable in a living space, we get used to the stuff we see – even if it is a bit of a mess.  While others may immediately notice, we are a little bit blind.  Spiritually, it can be the same way.  Clutter starts piling up around us spiritually, but we sort of get comfortable with it.  As we look at Jesus' story in John, we see that He wasn't content to let people be spiritually complacent – especially when they were totally off track.  They may well have been used to the way things were, but Jesus cleaned house.  Is there anywhere that we need Jesus to break us free from the spiritual pattern we've been living?

SATURDAY EVENING SERVICES

We will be having service on Saturday evenings most every week through December.  However, there are a few times where there will be no Saturday evening service!  Here they are: November 24th, and December 15th.

If you make additions after you turn in your form, just let him know!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

NOMINATIONS

We are starting our nomination process for deacons and elder candidates - forms will be out this Sunday. You can see Pastor Mark with any questions and give your completed form to him.

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE

CAR NEEDED

One of our young adults is in need of a car at a low cost. If you have a car for sale or know or someone who may be selling ($3000 price range), please contact Dana Ott at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org and she'll pass the information along. Thanks so much!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

Is there anyone out there who might be willing to fill in as a helper on an 'as needed' basis?  Sometimes our volunteers don't show up and we need a last minute fill in.  If you are willing to be pulled out of Bible Study occasionally to help, please let Jen Winstel know.

COAT DRIVE

Heads up! It's not too soon to start going through your winter coats and setting aside those your family may have outgrown or are will no longer be wearing.  We plan on having a Coat Drive in November to help out those who are in need of a warm coat for the winter months.  You get a cleaner closet and someone else gets a winter coat!  More details to follow.

MEALS MINISTRY

One of the ways we serve the body of Christ here at Hope is by providing a meal when certain situations come up.  Sometimes it is a happy occasion, like the birth of a baby.  Other times, there has been a surgery or illness that makes receiving a meal a relief and a true blessing.  If you have the time and the availability to provide a meal and deliver it, this would be a great ministry for you!  Having a list of reliable people means each person would only be called on every so often.  There is a signup sheet in the lobby.  Contact Carole Baumiester (needsministry@gmail.com) with any questions.

FOOD PANTRY

Current pantry needs:  Hot and cold cereals, boxed macaroni & cheese, and freezer items such as burgers, hot dogs, entrees, etc.

See Karen Jones with any questions regarding the pantry.

Please remember to check the expiration dates and leave all donations in the basket located outside the kitchen door.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Saturday Night Service – Please lift up these services as we move forward in seeing if a Saturday evening service is a good fit for us.

Kids Ministry Director – We are thankful that Matt Russell has stepped in to run our Children's Christmas Program!  Let's keep him in prayer as he takes the lead in this.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." Ephesians 6:18

Found by the Savior,
Lois
