Prayer Update

We give thanks to our God, who is merciful and powerful - He spared Art Muhlbair from serious injury.  Lucy sends her thanks for everyone who prayed.  Art was using the restroom at work when a runaway dump truck (no driver) crashed through the walls of the building right to where Art had just been standing.  He was knocked unconscious from the debris falling on him, but then managed to crawl out from the building underneath the truck to the outside. No major injuries, praise God!

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

Lucy Muhlbaier is on her way to the hospital because her husband Art was in a car accident.  Please pray for her safety as she drives since she is quite upset.  Pray for God to lay His healing hand on Art and to guide the doctors as they treat him.  Pray for peace for Lucy while she waits to hear the status of things.

Thank you.

Hope Notes 5/26/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching some baby robins being given a few life lessons from Mama robin.  They took tentative hops around on the grass while she flitted around them encouraging them.  She pulled worms from the ground and dropped them into the babies open mouths. Then suddenly one of them got into our bird bath and didn't know how to get out.  He literally sat down (I didn't know a bird could DO that) and waited for his mommy to rescue him.  And guess what?  She never did!  He eventually gathered up his courage and took off!  I, of course, related it to how God sometimes lets us wait for the "rescue" that doesn't seem to come when we want it.  He instead allows us to rely on Him for the strength to move forward in faith, even if we are scared.  Looks like God gave Mama robin the right instincts!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

5/29 – Directed by A Closed Door (1 Samuel 29)

God gives us direction in our lives by many different methods.  First of all, there is the Bible that gives us the truth in reliable written form.  From God's Word, we can learn so many truths that will point us in ways we should go, and point us away from ways we shouldn't go.  There is also God's Spirit in our hearts as believers that speaks to us prompting us to follow His leading.  But one way that God graciously gives direction is by cutting off paths that seem to be the way to go.  We often call this a closed door.  When God stops us from going the way we were planning to go (or that others were planning for us to go), it can be frustrating.  But if we will know how to accept that closed door as God's direction, we can enjoy the security and peace that comes from allowing God to be in charge of our lives.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BUSINESS MEETING
Sunday June5th

We are asking our partners (and regular attenders who are interested) to stay after the service for a brief business meeting.  The Leadership Team is making some minor adjustments to our budget for 2011 and we need to present that to our partners and explain the reasoning behind it.  Praise the Lord that we have seen significant growth in our attendance and giving this year.  Much of the proposed adjustments address the reality and blessing of growth at Hope.  We are also thankful that we have seen the Lord bless us with more money towards savings in these first five months than we had planned to accumulate all year!  That enables us to look for even more ways to invest in our church's health and growth.

COMPASSION FAST
Join us in a Compassion Fast during the month of June!  Here's the plan - we're asking anyone interested to set aside something for the month of June that costs them money - and instead to save that money toward giving to those in need.  On the first Sunday of July, we'll collect whatever people have saved and then find some needy families to help out.  In the mean time, fasting like this is a great reminder of how we've been blessed and a great opportunity to pray for spiritual needs in the lives of others.  So please consider being a part of this powerful opportunity to be a blessing to others by sacrificing
.

SAINTS PRISON MINISTRY

SPM is a unique prison ministry that reaches inmates with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through athletics. Statistics show that the vast majority of prisoners will not attend a traditional religious program.  However, inmates will gladly attend sporting events at which a gospel message is shared. Our own Bill McGinness participates in this ministry every summer and only needs $725 more in order to do so.  You can help him reach this goal through prayer and/or financial contributions. Checks can be made payable to Bill McGinness.

Come and join us for a good cup of coffee and some fellowship before services.  It's such a nice way to start your morning!

Hope Notes 5/19/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Last week I was treated to a glimpse of glory from God.  He opened the skies to reveal one of His most beautiful and meaningful creations – a gorgeous rainbow displayed from one side to the other across the bay.  I'd never seen one so bright, so complete.  It literally brought tears to my eyes as I recalled God's oath attached to His rainbow – that He is faithful to His Word and will keep all His promises to us. (Gen 9:12-17)  What a loving God we have that He thinks to give us a visible reminder of His assurance!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS
Wednesday Evenings 7:00-8:15

We are taking a break from our regular Bible study and offering four different workshop classes! Don't miss this opportunity to gain insight, help and encouragement in these important areas of spiritual growth:
Marriage
Leaders:  Steve & Karen Jones and Damon & LaTosha Briggs

The Art of Marriage is a video-based program using biblical principles to help couples fully experience God's design for marriage.  An added bonus will be a custom emphasis on finances in marriage, using the Briggs' extensive expertise in this area.

Grace Based Parenting
Leaders:  Pastor Mark & Dana Ott

In Grace Based Parenting, Dr. Kimmel offers a revolutionary concept that focuses on using God's parenting as a model for our own.  We'll take these weeks to read through this book and discuss it together as we each work on becoming more like Him – even in our parenting!

Personal Value and Significance
Leaders:  Tom Albright and Pat Harkin

The Search for Significance is a book that takes the need of every person to know that they matter – that they have value and significance and examines it in light of what God says in the Bible.  Each week, you'll read some of the book and come prepared to share what God is teaching you.
Basics of Christianity
Leaders:  Bob Baumiester and Mike Hartwell

Whether you are a new Christian who needs to learn the basics, or if you've been a believer a long time but need a "refresher course" on your faith, this is the class for you! We will be using the Bible as our guide to finding out what God has to say about things like salvation, the authority of Scripture, and prayer, etc.

Hope Notes 5-12-2011

Hi Everyone!

Pastor Mark here this week!  Lois is away on a well deserved getaway, so I thought I'd take a chance to write to everyone this week.  I want to remind you about many different opportunities to be a part of what God is doing at Hope, and invite you to jump in!

Our family is certainly busy at this time of year.  I'm sure all of you are as well. So there are plenty of reasons to let weekends slip by without being able to join us for worship.  Or to feel unable to be around for activities or "Workshop Wednesdays".  But let me encourage you to recognize what we talked about last week - your spiritual health is the highest priority of your life.  It is the fountain head from which EVERY healthy thing flows for each of us.  We all need the encouragement, fellowship, and spiritual nourishment that comes from making sure we stay involved, invested, and connected at church!  And more than that, we need you at Hope... our church is all about the people God has brought, and how He uses us in one another's lives as we grow together in grace.

After all, God's plan for showing His love and grace to this world is US!  We are witnesses and ambassadors for His redeeming plan for every person.  There are plenty of simple ways to let your light shine.  You can invite someone out to a service or activity at church, or pass along a CD of a service that could speak to a need in their life.  You can speak an encouraging word or ask if you can pray for them about some need.  You can live out your faith in the love and compassion of God, and grow in your faithfulness to follow Jesus in the choices you make with what you do and say.  So ask the Lord to show you how you can be a testimony to others for Him!

These past few weeks at church have been powerful.  Easter was just amazing, and Mother's Day overwhelmed me with a sense of the Spirit's power and presence as we worshipped and looked into the Word.  I see people making the effort to welcome new folks each week, and keeping Hope a place where people feel "at home".  We can never rest on a reputation - each time we get together, we need each one who is a part of Hope to look around and make sure that no one is ignored or pushed aside.  I am grateful to be a part of a church where the people have that kind of heart for one another!

Our Workshop Wednesdays have been amazing!  We are thankful for the way God is using them.  Please pray with us that God will accomplish all that He has in mind as we go forward in this exciting setup for Wednesday nights.  And pray for Franne and Liz as they take the lead on what our kids will be doing in the next few months!  We never want them to be left behind in these exciting times.

Don't miss Sunday - in fact, come out early and grab a cup of coffee or tea and spend some time visiting with one another.  We'll lift up our hearts in worship, and then we'll get back into our story about David.  This week, we'll take a look at how we sometimes wind up back in mistakes that we thought we had left in our past.  I'm sure most of us have at some point been surprised when we stumble back into something we've regretted.  Maybe we thought we'd never struggle with it again, or maybe we thought we'd grown past being pulled toward a particular mistake.  But we'll see that David walks right back into a mistake he made before.  And we'll see how we get into those situations, and how to avoid them!

Monday is our "Fiesta de Mayo" for our Young Adults.  We are going to host a dinner at church in the youth room for all our young adults (post high school through early thirties), and it will be a blast!  Dana and I already have our outfits started so that we can be appropriately Mexican.  Please make sure you're with us on Monday night if you're in this age group.  And please invite out friends - we want to see God use our group to include more and more young adults, and to help each of us grow in our faith!

Mark your calendars for our upcoming Music Ministry meeting.  If you are a part of our music ministry or would like to be a part, join us on Saturday morning, May 21 from 9:30-noon.  We'll have coffee, bagels, and donuts, so we can all get our brains functioning as we look at our philosophy of music ministry - basically, why we do what we do!

Also, we have our Spring Cafe coming up on May 25 (Wed night) at 7 pm.  We need people to sign up (in the Resource Room) to bring snacks and dessert, and we need people willing to share a talent with us.  It is always an amazing time together as a church family, so don't miss it!

And, our Leadership Team is planning a fellowhip at church for "New Families" on June 17th.  We'll get more details out in the coming weeks, but if you've started attending in the past 6 months or so and want to get to know our elders and leaders better, come out and spend some time with us that evening!  With so many new faces at Hope, we're looking forward to the opportunity to put some names with faces and get to visit with many of you.

We have lots of opportunities in our church to serve one another and the cause of Christ.  We need each person who is a part of Hope to be serving the body in some way.  We need passionate teachers for our kids who see how great of an opportunity it is to share the love of Jesus with our young people.  We need people to help with Sound and Media ministry who understand the vital importance of these 'background' technical ministries.  I'd love to see people who have skills and a passion to serve step up and join those teams to make them even better.  Our deacons can use people willing to help out as needs arise in the body and at the church building.  Each week, look at the opportunities to serve and ask the Lord how you can help!  Then, followup and volunteer every time you can!

Also, as summer approaches and some of you travel, don't forget that technology makes it easy to keep up with what's going on.  Each week, the recording of the Sunday message is available on our website - you can listen on your computer, or save it to a CD or MP3 player and take it with you!  And our FACEBOOK account will keep updating the latest news and upcoming events.  If you're a part of Facebook, don't forget to encourage Emily and "like" our page!  It's a simple and easy way to let her know we appreciate all that she does!

I'll let you all get back to your busy day - but as I go, I just want to tell you that God is using you all in my life as a great encouragement.  So many times over the past year, He has used YOU in ways that you may not even have known to be a blessing to me.  So thank you all.  It is a privilege to partner with you for the cause of Christ at Hope!

God bless you all and have a great week!
Pastor Mark

Hope Notes 5/4/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Since my own mother is no longer here on earth with me, on Mother's Day my heart always goes out to those who have lost a mother or a child.  Sometimes having a day set aside to honor something is simply a painful reminder of what you have lost.  Instead, try turning your attention to someone else who fills that role in your life.  God is always faithful to give us exactly what and who we need.  If you examine your life, I am sure you will find that person.  Honor them and thank them for who they are to you.  And for those of you who are blessed to have your loved ones by your side, rejoice in them, honor them, and thank God that they are still with you!

SUNDAY MESSAGE
5/8 – MOTHER'S DAY –Priorities that Simplify Life (Matthew 22:34-40)

There's a lot to juggle in life, and probably no role in life has more juggling to do than our moms.  Schedules are overloaded and there never seems to be enough time to do all that needs to get done.  With all the chaos swirling in our lives, it can be overwhelming to know what to do.  We want to take a look at what Jesus has to say about priorities in our lives.  Jesus is having a discussion with religious leaders about relationships and making choices based on loyalties and priorities.  The way He sums it all up can really simplify our decision making process and help us to know what MUST have our attention and what can wait until later.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE? Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at Prayer Team with any questions.

BIBLE READING FOR MAY – PSALMS BOOK ONE (1-41)
The Psalms are a collection of songs and poems written by various authors.  They give us a beautiful glimpse of the nature of God and His undying love for us.  Book One is composed mostly of prayers of faith in times of adversity.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS
Wednesday Evenings 7:00-8:15

We are taking a break from our regular Bible study and offering four different workshop classes. We will have a marriage class, a parenting class, a basics of Christianity class, and a class on finding personal significance.  Each class will be based on a book study and Wed nights will be a discussion of what we are learning through our reading.  We'd like to invite everyone to choose one class, and sign up right away!  We need to order materials so they are ready for the class.

You will find some of the most respected and influential pastors and experts on marriage and family all in one setting.  An added bonus will be a custom emphasis on finances in marriage, using the Briggs' extensive expertise in this area.

Parenting
Leaders:  Pastor Mark & Dana Ott

What parent doesn't want help in parenting? There are plenty of resources out there that give techniques and plans for raising kids. But which one is right? We want to take a look at the Biblical model for parenting. In Grace Based Parenting, Dr. Kimmel offers a revolutionary concept that focuses on using God's parenting as a model for our own.  We'll take these weeks and read through this book and discuss it together as we each work on becoming more like Him – even in our parenting!

Personal Value and Significance
Leaders:  Tom Albright and Pat Harkin

There is a desperate cry in the heart of every person to know that they matter – that they have value and significance.  The Search for Significance is a book that takes that need and examines it in light of what God says in the Bible.  Each week, you'll read some of the book and come prepared to discuss and share what God is teaching you as well as to listen to what the Lord is doing in the hearts of everyone else.

Basics of Christianity

Have you ever felt lost when people start talking about the Bible, or question you about what exactly does it mean to be a believer? Whether you are a new Christian who needs to learn the basics, or if you've been a believer a long time but need a "refresher course" on your faith, this is the class for you! We will be using the Bible as our guide to finding out what God has to say about things like Salvation, the authority of Scripture, Prayer, Baptism & Communion, Serving God & Giving, etc. The Bible is God's greatest resource for us to learn from and we will show you how to do jus

Note:  There will be no classes on May 25th due to our Spring Café event.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SAINTS PRISON MINISTRY

SPM is a unique prison ministry that reaches inmates with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through athletics. Statistics show that the vast majority of prisoners will not attend a traditional religious program.  However, inmates will gladly attend sporting events at which a gospel message is shared. Our own Bill McGinness participates in this ministry every summer and needs to raise $1000 in order to do so.  You can help him reach this goal through prayer and/or financial contributions. Checks can be made payable to Bill McGinness.

JOB OPPORTUNITY
