Hope Notes 2/27/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

I was in the doctor's waiting room the other day………waiting AND waiting!  As I looked around, I noticed that every single person there, young and old, had their heads looking down at their laps.  What is going on?  Has everyone been overcome with some strange sleeping sickness?  Then I realized they were all busy tapping and scrolling away on their phones.  There was an entire room full of people with absolutely no interaction. I tried to catch someone's eye just to smile and say good morning; no one would look up. This experience made me wonder two things:  If we've lost the ability to engage in simple pleasantries with each other and if we've lost the ability to engage our own minds with imagination and thoughts when we are at rest? More importantly, when we constantly keep our minds occupied like that, we leave no room for the things of God to seep in.  How can we hear the Spirit whispering to us or ponder the mysteries of faith?  God tells us to "Be still and know that I am God." (PS 46:10)  How can we do that if our minds are never allowed to 'be still'?  How about if the next time you're stuck waiting somewhere, instead of pulling out your phone, you ask God to clear your head and allow your mind to breathe? I think you will find you like what He fills it with.

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

March 2 – Not Enough (John 6:1-15)

Have you ever gone to a restaurant and found out at the end of the meal that you didn't have enough cash on you to pay for the meal?  Maybe you forgot to bring money or maybe you forgot that you already spend the money on something else.  Panic or embarrassment can overwhelm you in a moment like that!  It's even worse to look at the challenges and situations of your life and feel like you just don't have enough inside you to face what's coming.  Jesus faced a very large and very hungry crowd with no food.  What they come up with as a solution reminds us all that He is the master of taking what seems like too little and making it all that we need!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

9:30 – 9:35

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 9:30 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Pat Harkin at Prayer Team with any questions.

MARCH CHALLENGE VERSE

Philippians 3:13-14

DAILY BIBLE READING CHALLENGE

Pastor Mark has thrown down a challenge!  He is challenging everyone to read their Bible every day during the month of March.  It can be a chapter a day (like the book of Proverbs) or it can be simply picking up a copy of The Daily Bread in our resource room and reading the corresponding passage each day.  There are online resources and reading plans available on many sites (one of the most popular is www.bible.com where you can download the app and pick a daily reading plan).  But however you do it, find a way to spend some time each day reading God's Word for yourself!

Girl Talk - Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone. There's some truth in that saying, but we've probably all experience the pain of having a secret revealed. What are the benefits to keeping a secret versus gossip?

Hope Notes 2/20/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

We're well into the first quarter of the year and for me that has meant a lot of 'start up' paperwork for different things at church.  I finally feel like I'm pretty much caught up and things are progressing as they should.  You might think that this would cause some stress or pressure, but you know what?  It doesn't.  I love it.  I know that God has placed me in just the right areas to serve at Hope.  I can say this with confidence because I've been on the other side of that where I've been serving out of pressure, or guilt, or because no one else would do it.  That also meant I was serving on the basis of my own strength.  It was awful.  There is a huge difference in serving where God wants you to be through HIS power, and struggling through on your own.  I'd like to encourage those of you who are afraid to serve because you think it will be a chore or you're afraid you won't be able to do it.  It may take some courage to step out of your comfort zone, but I promise you – if God is leading you to a certain ministry, He will provide you with everything you need to do the job.  Not only that, but He will honor your choice to serve with blessing after blessing.  Really spend some time praying and thinking about those little nudges you feel, the places where your thoughts turn to, the ideas you want to share. If you keep your heart tuned towards these things, God will absolutely guide you to where you need to be!

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

February 23 – Ignoring the Testimony (John 5:31-47)

Have you ever recounted a story that you witnessed firsthand and had someone tell you that you were wrong?  Maybe there was some trouble and the person you're speaking to is trying to place the blame on you.  Or maybe they just don't want to believe what you are saying.  It is overwhelmingly frustrating to know that what you are saying is the truth, but to be ignored or dismissed.  Jesus talks about that experience to those who doubted him.  He points to several supporting proofs for his identity and role.  But no matter how much these people need the truth, they refuse to believe.  Let's not fall prey to ignoring the truth about Jesus!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE

NURSERY HELPERS NEEDED

We have enough workers to fill the schedule, but we still need a few extra helpers to be on call in case there are a lot of babies in the nursery on any given Sunday.  Our baby population has been booming and it's a little too much for only 2 workers.  Contact Alicia Heverly at lilfeet21@hotmail.com if you are interested in helping.

COFFEE TEAM

Have you been enjoying our coffee café?  Why not lend a hand to our Coffee Team and take a turn occasionally to set up on Saturday night (about 15 mins) and cleanup on Sunday after the service.  Contact Jeff Toomin at jktoomin.98@comcast.net with any questions.

SUNDAY MORNING OPENING

We're looking for anyone who would be interested in helping Matt or becoming a part of the Sunday morning openings for kids.  You would be playing some games, singing together, and other fun stuff!  If you think you might like to get involved, contact Matt at mruss80@gmail.com.

SATURDAY EVENING CHILDCARE

We'd like to have some basic childcare for our Saturday evening services.  Anyone interested in watching little ones (3 and under) on a rotating basis, please contact Pastor Mark.

TEACHERS AND AIDES NEEDED

One of our teachers is moving and so we are in immediate need of a teacher for our 3rd-5th grade classroom.  We could also really use one additional teacher and one more helper.

Teachers work on rotation, with 2 weeks in the classroom and 6-8 weeks off. High school teens, this is a great way to minister to the younger kids! We would like to make "teaching teams" of one teacher, one helper, so if an adult-teen team is interested in working together, let me know. Thanks so much for your willingness to serve our youngest family members.

Please contact Mary Lebeau (marylebeau@verizon.net; 856-316-6301) if you're interested or if you have any questions about the program.

FOOD PANTRY

Please check the expiration dates of any donations and place in the basket located outside the kitchen door. Contact Karen Blythe with any questions or if you are interested in helping with our pantry.

Hope Notes 2/13/14 ♥

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Valentine's Day is tomorrow. Traditionally, it's a day designated for 'couples'; a romantic sort of day.  Therefore, it can either be a day that makes you feel loved & treasured, or a day that slaps you in the face because you feel alone.  I would encourage anyone who feels alone/unloved to remember this:  God loves each one of us with an unfailing, unconditional, everlasting love.  Proverbs 19:22a tells us, "What a person desires is unfailing love."  So there it is.  There is the love you will never find on earth in a human being.  Not in your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your children, your friends.  None of us are capable of loving the way God loves.  Chris Tomlin sings, "You never change, God You remain the Holy One – my unfailing love."  I know you won't be given any candy or flowers from God, but what you receive from Him is far more precious and priceless than any token of love produced here on earth.

SATURDAY EVENING & SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

Knowing vs Doing

We've all experience the disconnect between knowing and doing. We desire to see change in our life, but we are unwilling to do what we know needs to get done. A change in character is always preceded by a change in behavior. We know we should be more like Christ, but are unwilling to take the necessary steps to act more like him. Holiness is not going to happen by accident. Holiness is the byproduct of obedience. Too often we settle for knowing rather than doing, we settle for surviving when we've been called to thrive.

TEEN SERVICE

This weekend our teens will be leading the service and our worship. We have the added privilege of being served communion by our youth.  We are deeply thankful that God has given us a vibrant youth ministry at Hope, and for each young person who is engaged in this group.  Make plans to join us and support them as they step out in faith. Get ready to receive the amazing blessing that comes as our young people serve the Lord and all of us at here at Hope.

(2/24) - Our last week with Hark! Come as we have another great discussion about apologetics.

ROOTED WEDNESDAYS

(2/19) - GUY TALK - Where do we find our worth and value? We'll hear one perspective from the wisest man who ever lived. (No, not Jim.) GIRL TALK - Having friends is important to all of us, but who do we know who are real friends are?

RE-PLUGGED RETREAT

3/7 – 3/9

In today's media driven culture we are always plugged in - plugged in to the drama of our friends, plugged into the constant news cycle, plugged in to the latest trends in music, fashion and everything else. Bad news is that doesn't leave us much time to be plugged into God. Come out for a weekend of unplugging and then re-plugging. We'll have plenty of fun as we grow closer together and closer to God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ATTENTION PARENTS OF ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

We are asking that the children not bring any food or beverages (especially hot) into their morning worship room or their classrooms.  Not only is it a distraction from their time of worship and their lessons, it becomes the responsibility of the leaders to be on the lookout for spills, etc.  We are especially concerned about children being burned from all the hot drinks that are being brought in.

If the kids are sent in with food or drinks, the teachers will have to take them to hold until the end of class.  Thank you for your cooperation in making their worship and learning a safe and happy experience!

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS

Please help us keep our hallways and coffee room safe and clear!  We are asking that parents make sure all of the minors at church are in the appropriate space during services.  For elementary kids and younger - this would be in their classrooms; these classes are designed for an age appropriate learning experience. For infants - it is in our awesome nursery, which is staffed by caring and wonderful workers. This helps keep our auditorium as distraction free as possible.  Please know that all our workers are background checked for your peace of mind. Finally, all teens should be in the auditorium during the entire service unless they are serving in a class.  Our ushers will ask any teens in the coffee room or halls without a parent to return to the auditorium.  Thanks for your help in doing all we can in consideration of one another and in teamwork for the function of our church family!

CHURCH DIRECTORY – FINAL SUNDAY TO REGISTER

We need your help to fill our directory!  We've looked at the progress with our pictures and information – we have LOTS of gaps! We need as many people as possible to be included so that we all can have a complete resource to turn to when we just can't place a name or face! We will pass around a registration sheet one last time this Sunday.

For those who would still like to have their family picture taken, we will have one last chance on Sunday, February 23rd.   For those who are supplying their own photo, you need to turn them in to Lois Hartwell by Sunday, February 23rd as well. Contact Lois Hartwell (foolsforchrist7@yahoo.com) with any questions.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY CONFERENCE

Saturday, March 22nd

Children's Ministry Workers! You are invited to a Children's Ministry Conference here at the church on Saturday, March 22nd from 9:00am-2:00pm. It'll be an awesome and unifying time as we discuss where our Children's Ministry is headed and what the next few months will look like.  We'll also take time for training and group discussions.  Breakfast and lunch will be served.  You won't want to miss it!

JOIN THE CONVERSATION!

Don't be shy!  Jump in and get engaged in some spiritual conversations via social media stuff like facebook and twitter.  We'd love for you to share your thoughts and your spiritual journeys so that we can walk through life a little more 'together'.  Share something you're thankful for, share what God is doing in your life through the challenge verse, share what you learned at our last service, etc.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Sunday Morning Children's Opening – Let's keep Matt Russell in prayer as he leads in this new venture for our children.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." Ephesians 6:18

Loved by our Savior,
Lois
