Hope Notes 1/28/10

Dear Friends of Hope ~

God showed me in a BIG way this week just how very little control I have over anything, despite my illusions to the contrary. He protected my daughter in a nasty car accident that destroyed her car but not her life.  There wasn't anything I could have done to help her, but He had it all in His hands.  And all without my help (imagine that)! He reminded me that He can certainly handle anything that happens in our lives; we need not fret and worry about all the details. Take that burden off your shoulders – God's got you covered!

SUNDAY SERMON

1/31- Enthusiasm and Maturity (Acts 18:18-28)

What was the last thing you got REALLY excited about?  Maybe you have a few moments burned into your mind filled with excitement that you love to reminisce.  We tend to think that growing up or maturing dilutes our enthusiasm for life.  And that can be the case.  Looking at this story in Acts 18, we'll see a man named Apollos who was eager and bold in speaking for Christ.  However, he wasn't mature.  So some friends pulled him aside and helped him grow.  It can be hard to remain enthusiastic and eager while being instructed. But Apollos did just that – pouring out his enthusiasm after he had been corrected – and becoming even more powerful as a witness for Jesus Christ.

NEW FEATURE – HCF BOOK CLUB

"Fresh Start" by Doug Fields (Youth Pastor at Saddleback)

With the New Year approaching it's a good time to talk about getting a fresh start. This book examines how we get stuck in our lives and some of the relational steps we can take to get unstuck.  By engaging the Spirit's work, each of us can have a fresh start no matter what we've faced!  I believe it is a book with a ton of hope for anyone who is struggling in their walk. Although he covers some heavy topics, Doug Fields' writes with a light style so it's an easy book to read.

Hope Notes 1/21/10

Dear Friends of Hope ~

An unsolicited shout-out for Wednesday night Bible Study……..

Adding to the great testimony that Karen gave on Sunday, I would just like to say how wonderful it has been to see Wednesday nights packed out for Bible Study.  Even though it's cold, it's the end of the day, it's quite the drive (for some), and there are lots of other things pulling at us to stay home – we are there.  And God meets us there as well.  If you've ever thought that the Old Testament was dry, come on out and see how alive and relevant it is!

SUNDAY SERMON

1/24 – An Adventure with God (Acts 18:1-17)

So what exactly is the difference between an adventure and an ordeal?  Many of the same elements are associated with both ideas.  Certainly, if given the choice, we'd all choose the adventure instead of the ordeal!  But do we have that choice?  In essence, the difference between the two experiences is the outlook of the person on the journey.  A person on an adventure embraces the uncertainty and the twists and turns, believing that the whole experience is worth it.  As we continue in Acts, we'll see that Paul is on an adventure with God.  He could have looked at his circumstances and been weary and worn from all the uncertainty, but in the story we'll see today, we can understand that his outlook of faith was well founded

Hope Notes 01/14/09

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Now that we've gotten into 2010 (are you used to writing '10 yet?) let's do all that we can to make this year one where we make people feel welcome at Hope.  We need to make sure we look around for new faces and go up to them with a heartfelt welcome.  We also need to look around for faces that may have been missing for awhile and have returned.  Let them know we notice that they are back.  And don't forget those familiar faces we see every week; sometimes we tend to let them fade into the woodwork because they are such a familiar sight.  But they like to be noticed too!

SUNDAY SERMON

 1/17 – Open to Anything (Acts 17:16-34)

In today's world, it seems that the most celebrated quality is "open-mindedness".  Upon closer examination, this is really not a very truthful description.  Open-minded seems more and more to mean that certain ideas and behaviors that were once rejected are now accepted.  However, if you have other ideas or behaviors that don't fit this mold, you are "closed-minded".  A truly open person will seek the truth, no matter what it is.  In Acts, Paul finds himself in Athens with a group of people who love to intellectually explore possibilities.  Paul uses this openness to bring them the truth.  Some prove themselves to truly be open by receiving the truth – while others find the truth interesting, but not compelling.  If our world truly is "open-minded" – why don't we (like Paul) just take them the truth?

Service Arrangements for Toni Zimmerman

Services for Toni Zimmerman are as follows:

Friday 1/15 at Barclay Funeral Home in Clayton (208 Maple St, Clayton, NJ 08312).  The viewing will be at 10 am and the funeral service at 11 with burial services to follow.  As part of our church family, we'd love for anyone who can come and support Lisa and Bob and the family to be there.  But since many of you can't be there on Friday, please lift up those services and the family in prayer this week, and especially during that time!  It would also be nice if we could send cards to the family to show our love and support.

Hope Notes 01/07/10

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Okay, I guess its official – the holidays are over.  I don't know about you, but I am very glad to be able to put away the decorations that have been cluttering up my house and have things return to normal (whatever that is!). When our regular lives get interrupted like that, it's so easy to slip out of our routines with the Lord.  Let's make a conscious effort to get back on track with God and really start the New Year right!

SUNDAY SERMON

1/10 – Missionary Lauren Pupchik

Hope is honored to have Lauren as part of our missionary family.  We have supported her for years as she serves the Lord in Guatemala.  Every time she comes, she is a true blessing and challenge to our church family.  We need to remember those who we partner with as missionaries by praying for them and supporting them faithfully.  The work they do is an extension of God's call for us as a church to take the gospel to the world!

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

JOB OPPORTUNITY

There is a part-time job available, 20hrs a week, no experience necessary, as an institution cook at Sterling House [Brookdale], in Deptford, at the intersection of Cattel Road and Rt 47.  See Bill Murray with any questions.

CHILDREN'S CHURCH HELP NEEDED

The Infants & Toddlers classes are in desperate need of teachers and helpers.  They recently lost five people and that puts a big vacancy in their schedule.  Let's all pitch in and give a little bit of time to help this ministry; we don't want to leave few people doing much work!

 CHILDREN'S CHURCH NEEDS

Donations of any flat bottomed juice boxes would be greatly appreciated.  You can give them to LaTosha Briggs.

 GREETERS NEEDED

If you are the friendly sort and would like an easy way to serve at Hope, this is for you!  We have a monthly rotating schedule of teams.  See Bill Berry to volunteer.

LAWN SIGNS

Please stop by the back of the church and pick up a lawn sign for you yard. This will be a great way to reach out to people in your neighborhood.  You never know who might be looking for a church home!

BUMPER STICKERS

These are a great way for people to be introduced to Hope.  Think of all the people you'll reach as your drive, sit at traffic lights, or even when your car is parked somewhere.  But remember…..you are an "advertisement" for Hope, so watch the road rage! J

Just drop your requests in the box near the door on Sunday or email Jim Bradshaw during the week at spaceheadjim@yahoo.com. He will get your requests to the team. If you would like your request to appear in the Hope Notes, just let Jim know.  If you want to be a part of this ministry, send Jim your email address and he will add your name to the team.  Please remember, anyone is welcome to join us for prayer at 9:15 on Sunday mornings whether they are on the team or not.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Janet Welsh – Cervical spine surgery on January 7th.  Please pray for relief from pain, strength, and peace.

Youth Group – For the Lord's direction and guidance.  For our young people to make it a priority to come.

Building – For God to continue opening/closing doors as we seek to establish a permanent home for Hope.

Small Groups - For God to lead and direct people to their various Small Group. For Small Groups to be a powerful spiritual and relational force at Hope.

Help us to remember to pray, Lord.  Not just for these specific requests, but "in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Ph 4:6

Believing Him,
