Hope Notes 10/30/08

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Don't forget - this is the weekend we set our clocks back one hour. Now, for those of you who have difficulty getting out the door on time for church………………….this Sunday should be a breeze. For once, Mark can look out on a congregation full of happy and alert faces!

SUNDAY SERMON

11/2 – Responding to Others (Titus 3:1-2)

America is the land of freedom – the home of the brave! We all treasure the gift of freedom that God has provided through the sacrifice of so many who have given their lives. Yet, subtly, our culture has taken this freedom and turned it in on itself. Our society has become obsessed with "our rights" and has taken on a very warlike tone. No one had better disrespect anyone else – or else! Yet, Paul teaches that as believers, we are to know how to submit to those who are in authority. We are to live humble and peaceable lives. Let's be reminded of our call as followers of Christ to a life that responds to those around us in a godly way!

BIBLE READING FOR NOVEMBER - 2 SAMUEL

This book portrays King David as a "man after God's own heart" and shows him to be a humble man willing to submit himself to God when even his "secret" sins are found out. Despite everything, David never forgot his God and, in the end, found forgiveness and restoration through Him. So can we.

Hope Notes 10-23-08

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Be sure to come and be a part of our Communion service this week. Experience the cleansing power of Jesus' blood shed for us on the cross at Calvary. Look around Hope as we stand in a circle; no one is first, no one is last. Together we celebrate and remember what Jesus did for us.

SUNDAY SERMON-COMMUNION SUNDAY

10/26 – The Work of Grace (Titus 2:11-15)

God's grace is amazing! Certainly, that is a reason why the old hymn "Amazing Grace" has been so loved for so long! But some see grace as a reason to live in sin and selfishness. What exactly does God's grace do in our lives? Paul teaches some very specific works of grace that God is doing in every believer. As we are again reminded of God's goodness, faithfulness, and love, let's also begin to respond to what grace is teaching us!

BIBLE READING FOR OCTOBER - JOB

Job was rich, married with ten children, and had the respect of his peers. Most importantly, he loved God. Yet God allowed Satan to test Job by taking everything from him. His wife told him to "curse God and die" and his three "friends" kept insisting he must have done something horrible to deserve his fate. Job knew that wasn't true; and although he never got an answer as to why he had to suffer, he got something much better. But you'll have to read for yourself to find out what!

Hope Notes 10-16-08

Dear Friends of Hope ~

I saw a message on a church's outdoor sign this week. It said, "Seasons change. God doesn't". I liked that. What a comfort it is to know we have a God who cannot lie, who will never leave us, who will never stop loving us, and who will never change!

SUNDAY SERMON - COMMUNION SUNDAY

10/19 – Learning in Every Stage of Life (Titus 2:1-10)

When do you know everything? For most of us, that time in life has come and gone (probably when we were about 18). But then we figure out that our learning and growing process never stops spiritually. We all have areas where we need to be instructed, and we need to receive that with open and humble hearts. In this passage, Paul gives some generalized advice for each stage of life – areas to target for growth and attention. We will take time in this service to see what Paul had to say and to learn from it for each of our particular situations.

Hope Notes 10-09-2008

Dear Friends of Hope ~

As we grow, we need to be sure we take the time to get to know one another. Not just the new faces, but the faces we've gotten accustomed to worshipping with over the years. Did you ever stop and realize that you've seen so and so for three years now and don't really know anything about them? Attending small groups and events like the upcoming Potluck Supper can help us. Let's make the effort and make deeper relationships!

SUNDAY SERMON - COMMUNION SUNDAY

10/12 – Dealing with Liars and Their Lies (Titus 1:10-16)

The work of God's people primarily is a struggle to hold onto and declare the truth. Our enemy is a master of lies. He will often send his workers into the church - or into our lives – to try to fill everything with deceit. How do we deal with those who fight against the truth? Paul gave instructions to Titus on how to deal with this problem at the church on Crete. We will look at this teaching from Paul and learn how we need to deal with this attack as a church, and how we need to recognize those who would destroy the truth.
