Hope Notes 8/28/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Last night's church picnic was an evening filled with old fashioned fun!  Good food (which no picnic is complete without), games, and lots of conversation.  There's just something about coming together as a church family outside of our regular Sunday mornings that is so nice!  We get to chat, laugh, catch up with old friends and make some new ones.  For me, the picnic is a reflection of the heartbeat of Hope.  We have the connection with others that is so important to us - something we don't always manage to accomplish on a busy Sunday morning.  Then we have the area of serving others – so many people worked hard behind the scenes getting ready for this big event.  The bouncy jump, the tent, tables, chairs, and food didn't all just magically appear.  There was thought and effort put into what food to serve, what games to play, and how to make the night something special.  I feel like those two areas are very much a part of who we are at Hope!  Connecting with others to form deeper relationships and serving others to show the love of Christ.  Add to that 'sharing God's redeeming work with everyone we can'…………and you have Hope in a nutshell!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

August 31 – His Forever (John 10:22-29)

Breaking up is hard to do.  Perhaps the most universal desire among humanity is the longing to have someone love you unconditionally.  Most of the time, we think of this in terms of a romantic relationship, but it can also be expressed in friendships and family relationships.  However, part of any relationship is the understanding that it can come to an end.  Some fight or disagreement can cause a person to no longer want to be with you.  So we live with insecurity.  Jesus offers a relationship with Himself and with the Father that is different.  He says that our relationship is entirely secure.  And if we understand and embrace this truth, it will transform our ability to love Him and to love each other.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

9:30 – 9:35

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 9:30 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone from 9:15 – 9:45 am in the Prayer Room. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!

Lost But Not Found

Good Morning Hope Friends ~

We need your help in locating some 'lost' items!  The black napkins we use for communion are missing-in-action, as are our spill bucket & towels.

I'm thinking some thoughtful soul may have taken them home to wash.

This would be the second time we've had to replace the napkins, bucket, and towels, so I thought I'd send out a request for help first!

If you know where our missing items have run off to, please just reply to this email and we'll gather the runaways and bring them 'home'!

Thanks so much,
Lois

Hope Notes 8/21/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

I do believe our dog Olive is part elephant.  She just never forgets!  ONE time she found a locust on the wall outside, ONE time she saw a chipmunk run up the drain spout, ONE time she saw a squirrel run under the porch……………..and now every time she goes outside to potty she has to run to each of those places and check it out.  After all, you never know when that locust might return or the chipmunk might run down the spout! I guess her little doggie brain isn't crammed full with all the things we humans keep stored in our brains.  For her, only important things (like locusts and squirrels) stay in the forefront of her memory.  This is what WE should do.  I want to live the way God commands us to in Proverbs 3:1 - "My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart..."  The things that should be in the front of my mind are the things of God.  I don't want to forget what He's done for me, how He wants me to live, or how much He loves me.  And yet, I often do.  My mind gets cluttered with the things of this world.  The next time I see Olive run right back to her 'important spots', I'm going to use that as a visual reminder to keep MY mind focused on what it should be!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

August 24 – The Good Shepherd (John 10:11-21)

COMMUNION

How can you know how much you love someone?  It is a question that has been written about by poets and songwriters for centuries.  Is it an overwhelming feeling?  Is it a 'can't live without them' realization?  Jesus calls Himself the 'Good Shepherd' and in this description, He talks about what love does.  Love is startlingly sacrificial.  And love is grounded in genuinely knowing and embracing the person who is loved.  Jesus describes His leadership as shepherding – a unique and original way of talking about leading.  But there is so much that we can learn about a relationship with Jesus by understanding that He is our Good Shepherd.

Hope Notes 8/14/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

On any given day (or evening) you might find me in my yard enjoying a stroll.  In the winter, spring, and fall I happily saunter along – taking in the sights and sounds of God's outdoors.  The summer, however, is a totally different story.  I creep slowly through certain areas, stop and look before venturing further along, and often wield a long stick in front of me.  What accounts for this behavior?  Why do I no longer feel the freedom to simply walk?  It's because I'm on the constant lookout for spider webs. My 'spidey radar' turns on when the weather gets warmer and doesn't shut off again till we've had a few frosts.  I hate this.  One single, sticky strand is enough to cause me to do the 'dance of fear' and flail around like a lunatic.  It's a fear totally out of proportion to the danger involved.  It's also a small example of how fear can run wild when we don't adhere to the biblical principles of trust and faith in God.  God tells us to 'fear not, do not fear, and do not be afraid' numerous times in Scripture.  And guess what?  Even if God only said it one time, it would still be true!  We need to hold on to that and live like we believe it!  I don't know exactly how to apply that to my irrational web fears, but I'm going to try!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

August 17 – Safe Sheep (John 10:1-10)

Do you have a security system for your home?  People set these alarms each night and whenever they are not home so that the safety of the house is automatically monitored – signaling when anyone enters who shouldn't be in the house.  Jesus uses a similar picture to talk about the safety of those who follow Him.  He describes a shepherd keeping his sheep safe both night and day.  He guards the door – and doesn't have to sneak around – because he is in charge of the sheep.  The thief comes with other intentions.  Jesus promises life 'to the full' to all those who are His sheep.  He will keep them safe and lead them in a way that brings abundant life.

We will need some help setting up tents and tables for our family picnic as well as volunteers to man the grill!  Contact Kathleen Toomin atjktoomin.98@comcast.net if you are willing to lend a hand or have any questions.

MEALS MINISTRY

Here at Hope we like to take care of our people!  When we know someone who recently had a baby, has an illness in the family, or any other occasion where having the burden of preparing a family dinner removed would be a big help – we like to take care of that for them!  If you would be interested in occasionally making or delivering a meal, contact Pat Nolan at pationolan@comcast.net.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP

We'd love to have people come and pray with us for the needs of the church and for God's power to be at work in our morning service.  You don't have to commit to coming every week, but our elders are asking those who are able come and join us!

FOOD PANTRY

We've been giving out LOTS of food – what a blessing it is to be able to help ease the burden for so many families!  But that means we are in need of a major restocking for our pantry! Any donations would be greatly appreciated!

Please check the expiration dates of any donations and place in the basket located outside the kitchen door. Contact Karen Blythe with any questions or if you are interested in helping with our pantry. Thank you!
