Hope Notes 7/28/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Over the past few weeks, one theme has been presenting itself over and over again – relationships.  What about them?  Well, I guess the main thing is how important they are.  And knowing how important they are, is it any wonder that Satan tries his best to destroy them?  We need to guard our hearts and nurture those relationships.  And what better place to form them, but at our church!  It is vital that we connect with one another, pray for one another, encourage one another, and create bonds that go beyond the casual Sunday morning chit chat.  "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.  A cord of three stands is not quickly broken" Ecclesiastes 4:12

SUNDAY MESSAGE
7/31 – The Momentum of Fighting (2 Samuel 2:10 – 3:5)

Slamming on the brakes in your car for a sudden stop lets you feel the fight we have against momentum.  Trying to stop all that steel from crashing into the obstacle in front of you is not easy and sometimes feels like it isn't going to happen.  But we face the reality of momentum in other areas of our lives too - whether spiritually, relationally, financially, or any other part.  It even seems senseless to keep making those choices, but somehow, we get drawn in again because we've been living in a mode that keeps going even while we're trying to stop.  After David is crowned king, the fighting between his men and Saul's men continues – even though Saul is dead.  As we look at this story, we'll see what it takes to bring destructive choices to an end in the face of our momentum.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE? Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at Prayer Team with any questions.

BIBLE READING FOR JULY – OBADIAH & JONAH
Obadiah is the shortest book in the OT!  He prophesies disaster on the nation of Edom for its mistreatment of God's people.  This little book assures us that God is looking out for us and that He is the One who will punish those who persecute us.  The book of Jonah tells the story of the Prophet Jonah's fate when he disregarded God's instruction to warn the pagan city of Nineveh about the coming destruction.  When God calls someone to do something, however, He sees that it gets done!  Read and find out what happened to Jonah.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY
7:00 – 8:15 pm
Throughout the summer, we will be treated to a variety of speakers and worship on Wednesday evenings.  It is always a blessing to hear the things that God has laid on another's heart as they come and share.  It's important that we "do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Heb 10:25)  Sometimes it's a little harder to get to church mid-week in the summer, but we need to come and support each other.  Get ready to be blessed!  Coming up next week - Praise & Worship Night!

Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Prayer Room at church.  All women are invited to attend.

Hope Notes 7/21/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Okay – I'm going to brag a little about our church.  (But, "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord."  2Cor 10:17)  I was having a conversation about church with my hairdresser (a confused almost-believer) and she thought for a moment and then she said, "You know, in all the years I've known you, you've never shown any question about your faith and you've never wavered in your love of your church.  How is that?"  Her statement bore testimony to how important having a good church truly is.  Then I remembered my cousin, who is very anti-Christian, and how even she remarks on how we view our church as "family".  Not only is it good for the one going to church, but it obviously affects your witness to others about having a relationship with the Lord and faithfully attending church.  We at Hope are so blessed to have that special place to call home.  Let us be mindful to cherish what God has given us and to act in way that shows our gratitude.

SUNDAY MESSAGE
7/24 – Crossing the Finish Line (2 Samuel 2:1-9)

Some journeys in our lives take a while.  We don't always have a concept when we begin of how long each journey will take, and so we do get surprised when we're still working on something months and years after we thought we'd already be done.  Other times, we know that the process we're working on will be lengthy, but we still get discouraged in the midst of the journey.  But what about when we get to the end?  Is the payoff always what we imagined?  As David comes to the end of his journey toward being king, we find that in spite of how long and hard the road has been, he does indeed make it to what God has promised.  And when he does, he faces new challenges right away.  Let's see how David learned that even a finish line doesn't end our need to depend on the Lord.

Hope Notes 7/14/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Has the vibe at Hope felt a little different this past week?  We've missed Pastor Mark and Dana, along with Kylie, Kara, Dylan, and Dustin!  God has been blessing them with a much needed and well deserved break, spending relaxing time together as a family.  Thankfully, we have those who are able and willing to step up and do what's needed to keep Hope running smoothly.  We've had a few of our men to lead us, and we still had awesome worship music!  But nothing takes the place of those six very special people and the empty spots they fill in our church and in our hearts.  Welcome home!

SUNDAY MESSAGE
7/17 – Good Sadness (2 Samuel 1:17-27)

Is it OK for a Christian to be sad?  Is a sad Christian someone who isn't living by faith?  Sometimes we get the idea that being a good Christian means never having a bad day or feeling blue.  Certainly, part of the fruit of the Spirit is joy, and that is always available to us.  So what do we do with those emotions that flood our hearts when we face loss or sorrow?  David wrote a song to mourn the loss of Jonathan and Saul.  And from what he writes, we can learn about how to embrace and express sadness and grief without losing our ability to walk by faith and find joy in the midst of sorrow.

I had an interesting experience the other day.  I came out of the store to find a woman standing behind my car taking a picture!  When she saw me, she jumped a bit and then gave me a sheepish grin.  Turns out she was taking a picture of my Hope bumper sticker.  She was new to the area and had been looking for a church.  She didn't have a pen to write down our name/website, so she snapped a picture with her phone!  Isn't that cool?  I got the chance to talk with her and share all the wonderful things about Hope and our Pastor with her!  If you don't have a bumper sticker, make sure you pick one up; you never know how God will use it to reach someone.

SUNDAY MESSAGE
7/10 – SPECIAL SPEAKER – Steve Jones
Be Prepared 1Peter 3:13-16

This Sunday, we have the privilege of having one of our elders share his heart with us.  The Lord has blessed Hope with a team of men who lead this church together.  We all appreciate the way God uses this team to bring His direction to Hope and how He uses them to minister to us.  So this Sunday, let's support Steve as he shares and look forward to what God has put in his heart to build us up in our walk of faith!

WOMEN'S PRAYER GROUP
Meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Prayer Room at church.  All women are invited to attend.

YOUNG ADULTS
Meets the 1st Monday of every month at 7:30 in the Youth Room at church.  Anyone who has graduated high school up to their early thirties is welcome.  See Pastor Mark or Dana for more information.
Note:  We will not be meeting in July, but will resume as usual in August!
