Hope Notes 5/27/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

Here we come up on Memorial Day weekend already – the beginning of the summer season.  That means the upcoming month of June will be jam packed with graduations, weddings, and all sorts of activities.  If you're a regular reader of Hope Notes, I know you know where I'm headed with this!  Please don't let all those activities crowd out your time with the Lord.  He still wants to meet with you during the week through prayer and devotionals.  And He still wants your presence at worship on Sundays. The times when we feel pulled in too many directions are the times we need to seek His face the most!

SUNDAY SERMON – COMMUION SUNDAY

5/30 – Defending Yourself With the Truth (Acts 24:1-21)

The defensive instinct in most of us is as natural a response as breathing.  If we feel accused or attacked, we will defend ourselves.  The desire to protect ourselves will even pull us toward doing or saying things that may not be true.  We somehow think that we should craft our words into whatever we think will help our cause – even if it isn't the truth.  But since the Spirit of God lives in us, we ought to be people who tell the truth.  Paul finds himself before a government official, basically on trial for his life.  But he simply defends himself with the truth.  It is a powerful statement of faith that Paul believes he should trust the Lord with His well-being instead of his own ability to talk his way out of the mess!

CD'S AVAILABLE

BIBLE READING FOR MAY – 1 JOHN

The apostle John wrote this letter to help his readers stay away from sin.  He tells us that our holy lives testify to our relationship with Christ and that we are to live to please God.  John also assures us that we can be forgiven when we blow it.  In other words, if you're a Christian, your life should show it – but you have a place to turn for help if you mess up.

Hope Notes 5/20/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

This Sunday we will celebrate Communion together as a family at Hope.  Communion is always a special time – it reminds us of all that Jesus did for us on the cross.  If you're anything like me, that's not something you think about every day.  I tend to "forget" about it unless I specifically draw my thoughts in that direction.  If we all kept that in the front of our minds, think how differently we would live each day!  So, be sure to come this Sunday and be reminded once again of our Father's great love for us, and of the price Jesus paid for our sins.

SUNDAY SERMON – COMMUION SUNDAY

5/23 Submission Isn't Surrender (Hebrews 12:5-13)
Waving the white flag, or throwing in the towel are the acts of the defeated.  They are vastly different from the free choice of submission, especially when submitting to the training of one in a superior position, which brings growth.  The disciples submitted to Jesus and the Bible tells us to "submit to the Father" as we are trained by the difficult experiences of life.  So what's it going to be – growth or giving up?
This message will dovetail with a 10-minute video by the Skit Guys about the process of us being God's workmanship.  The service will finish out as we celebrate communion together.

Hope Notes 5/13/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

Why does a spring rain smell so much better than a winter one, or an autumn rain?  There is just nothing like it!  Maybe it's the fact that the earth is warming up and the dirt has that soft, crumbly texture to it.  In fall and winter the dirt is hard.  I've made up my own theory on that – when the dirt is hard it can't absorb the rain as much and therefore you don't get the delicate ratio of rain/earth to create that marvelous smell!  Mind you, this is just my own little theory.  But anyway, it makes me think of our own hearts being soft and receptive to the Lord or hard and unyielding.  I don't know about you, but I definitely want my heart to be soft so that the Lord's "rain" has a receptive place to fall!

SUNDAY SERMON

5/16 – Disagreeing Partners (Acts 23:6-22)

If you've ever seen this dynamic, you struggle to try to understand how it happens.  Two people who don't like each other – and don't agree on much if anything at all – suddenly join forces because they both hate the same thing.  Somehow, they are able to act like partners, even though they are anything but.  In the story we'll see this day, Paul is faced with opposition made up of people just like this.  And Paul uses that fact to highlight their disagreement.  The mere mention of the topic sets off sparks, and the group that had come together to get rid of Paul is at each other's throats.  Just like Paul faced people who joined forces in spite of disagreements, we'll have to face the same thing in our world.  People who don't agree on how we got here or where we're going can all agree that Christians are wrong.  How do we face this type of struggle? Let's learn from Paul.

Dear Friends of Hope~

Here comes Mother's Day!  (Heads up in case you forgot.)  Not all of us are mothers, but all of us have mothers. Not all of our mothers are still with us, but I bet that every one of us can think of some "other mother" in our lives.  God mercifully puts these women in our lives to guide us and to love us along with our own mothers and sometimes in place of our own mothers, once they are gone.  If you know of someone like that in your own life, be sure to let her know on this special day.  You might be the only "child" she has!

SUNDAY SERMON

5/9 – MOTHER'S DAY – Finding Security in Life (Psalm 121)

We celebrate the wonderful gifts of motherhood on this day – thankful for God's awesome plan to use loving moms to raise healthy children.  Even if your home did not reflect God's design very well, we can still see the wisdom of the motherhood role.  God created women, in general, to love nurturing and relating – passing on key elements to their children so that they can feel secure in life.  But sooner or later, we all discover that the security we need cannot be found in human relationships.  Even the tendency for many ladies to desire security from their husbands will end in disappointment.  Sometimes, people turn to other things when they figure out how unreliable human security can be – things like money or control.  But these options cannot satisfy our need for real security.  So, on this Mother's Day, let's discover what God has to say about finding security in this life and learn how we can live in the warmth of an assurance that we are safe and protected.

PRAYER TEAM SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME

Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at spaceheadjim@yahoo.com with any questions.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY

7:00-8:15pm
Think the book of Genesis couldn't possibly relate to us and the world in which we live? Think again! Genesis means beginnings and that's just what this book is about. It describes a loving God who made all things perfectly, but also tells about the beginning of sin and how it ruined what had been a perfect relationship between God and man. Isn't that still happening today? Join us as we continue our study on the book of Genesis. Childcare is provided.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MOVERS/HELPERS NEEDED

Our Youth Leaders, Chris & Stephanie Mulder, need some help in moving to their new home.  Dates are 5/20, 5/21, and 5/22.  Anyone who can help please contact them at stephersmulder@comcast.net.

APARTMENT NEEDED
We have a couple in our church in need of an apartment for the two of them - no children or pets.  In our difficult economic times, we are looking for ways to help one another, so we'd like to ask that if anyone knows of an apartment or house for rent for a good price in the Woodbury/Deptford area, please let Pastor Mark know.  You can email him at pastormark@hopechristianfellowship.org.  Of course, if you have personal connections to some apartments or own one yourself and could give them some help with getting a better price for the rental, that would be even better!  Thanks!

HOPE'S LIST CLASSIFIED ADS

NEW!  Hope's List Classified Ads Program is to start June 1st.  Listing sheets are now available on the back table.  One sheet per 30-word listing.  Listings are for one month unless renewed.  Professional and Services and "forever" listings.  Listings are due the last Sunday of each month.  New Classifieds come out the FIRST Sunday of each month.  If you have any questions, see Wendy Devereaux.

RADIO MINISTRY UPDATE

We are now considering whether God wants us to continue with the radio ministry as well.  That decision will come down to finances and man-power.  We would need to have about $450 per week available and the Lord would need to bring us someone who can oversee that ministry administratively for us to be able to move forward. We have signed on for one more month at the discounted rate. We will continue to trust that the Lord will lead clearly in this decision as He always does when we leave it in His hands!
