STRONG MEN NEEDED!

We have a need for a few men to come and help Jess St.Petery move into her new apartment tomorrow.  She does have one pickup truck, but no one to lift the heavy stuff.  Any help would be greatly appreciated..........and an extra truck wouldn't hurt either!  The move is local and in the Deptford area.  She is hoping to start moving Saturday morning.

If you are willing to give a few hours to Jess, just contact her through email at jstpetery@yahoo.com or call 856-889-0182.  She can give you all the details.

Thanks so much!

Hope Notes 9/29/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
I always feel a little sad as I watch the leaves fall to the ground.  What makes them give up their grip on the branch and flutter to the earth?  Do you see how they sometimes fall without even a breeze to make them let go?  It's because they are slowly dying, their hold on the tree loosening a little more every day.  The branch doesn't let go of them; the leaves are the ones who "let go".  So it is with us and our heavenly Father.  We are the ones who begin "dying" as we slowly loosen our grasp on the Father.  It's a slow process – so slow that we may not even realize it's happening until one day we find ourselves on the ground, wondering how we got there.  "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." Hebrews 10:23

SUNDAY MESSAGE

10/2 – God Will Fight For You – 2 Samuel 5:17-25

Have you ever been surprised at the attacks you face in your life?  Maybe you weren't expecting to be attacked at all because you were doing the right thing – and suddenly, because of that, you're under attack. Or maybe what stuns you is the ferocity of the attack you're facing.  Life has plenty of battles to fight, and life as a believer has even more!  David experienced that reality soon after becoming king.  He had finally realized God's promise of ruling over Israel, and suddenly, the Philistines rise up to take him down.  As we watch David's approach to these battles, we can learn about our own battles.  And in the end, the good news is that we can have God fighting for us just like David did if we'll trust Him and follow Him just like David did

MESSAGES AVAILABLE

BIBLE READING FOR OCTOBER – JOHN
How would you respond if someone were to ask you, "Who was Jesus and what should He mean to me?"  If you're looking for answers to that question, look no further than the Gospel of John.  Written by "the disciple whom Jesus loved", the Gospel has one main purpose:  to foster faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SEPTEMBER GIVING UPDATE

For the month of September, we averaged $4255 per week which is a little above our weekly giving target of $4000 per week.  This brings our annual average weekly giving to $4226.  We are so thankful for each person who sacrifices and faithfully gives so that this ministry can flourish and reach out for the goals God has for us.  Please continue to pray for God's provision for our ministry, and for each family who is a part of our church family

DISTRACTION FREE ZONE
We are asking your help in keeping our worship service as free from distractions as possible in order to better focus our hearts and minds on what the Lord has for us.  Please be sure all cell phones are silenced and, if you need to get up during the service, please sit in the back or on the side of the auditorium.  These simple things can go far in giving our worship experience the reverence it deserves.  Thank you!

SPILLS STRATEGY
Oops!  Did your drink get knocked over during service?  Never fear – all you need to do is slip out the back and grab a greeter.  He/she will take care of it for you!  If you can't find a greeter, we do have a bucket with some towels in the storage closet out in the lobby.  Just grab a towel or two and throw it down on the spill.  We can deal with the intense clean up after service.

NOMINATIONS FOR DEACON AND ELDER CANDIDATES
This Sunday Pastor Mark will have the forms for partners to nominate partners for these roles.  More information regarding the process is on the forms.  Forms must be turned in to Pastor Mark by November 6th.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
The children will be practicing on Sundays this year.  Practices will begin for the elementary (1st-6th grades) on September 25th.  We're again inviting the 6th graders to join our program to help us make it even better.  Our Toddler and Pre-school classes will be working together and will begin practicing on October 9th.  We all love to have the kids on stage for the program (which this year will be on December 18th), so please make sure they are at church each Sunday to practice so that they can be a part of the program that day

FOOD PANTRY
THANKSGIVING BASKETS
We are beginning to gather the makings of a yummy Thanksgiving Dinner for families in need.  Please bring cranberry sauce, stuffing, canned sweet or white potatoes, rice or potato side dish mixes, canned french fried onion rings, etc.  We already have plenty of vegetables.  We can also take some refrigerator/freezer items such as frozen turkeys or Pillsbury biscuits.
Note:  Donations can be put in the wicker basket that's to the left of the kitchen door.

Hope Notes 9/22/11

Dear Friends of Hope~
Our family spent the last week relaxing together on our first vacation in four years.  It was a wonderful time of refreshment and reconnection.  But, you know what?  I really missed my church family!  Just one Sunday away makes me feel "out-of-the-loop" and with a little empty space where all the friendly hugs and greetings usually go.  It is such a blessing to be part of a church that truly does make you feel like family.  My hope and prayer for each and every one of you would be that Hope is the place you can call home and know that you have a place here in the body of Christ that no one else can fill.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

9/25 – Foundations for a Leader – 2 Samuel 5:1-16

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a famous monument in Italy.  It is certainly beautiful and ornate. But its fame comes from the simple fact that the builder did not have a strong enough foundation to keep it standing straight.  Left to itself, it would have eventually fallen over.  A seemingly simple oversight has very predictable and visible consequences.  And for every calling in our lives as believers, we need a foundation that is strong as well.  It begins (like it did for David as king over Israel) with hearing and following God.  Our relationship with Him is the first step.  But as we go forward, there are other key parts to the foundation of our lives.  And the choices we make here will have a dramatic impact on the stability and success of the work we do.   Will we be trustworthy….will we live in courage….will we build wisely for the future?  Let's look at David's example of what to do (and what not to do!).

Hope Notes 9-15-2011

Hello Friends of Hope!

This is Pastor Mark.  Lois and her family are away on vacation this week, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to fill in for her and send everyone a note this week.  I want to remind you about some of the things coming up and encourage you to join with us as God does amazing things at Hope!

First of all, this Sunday is going to be powerful.  We are talking about small groups at Hope this week.  I'm excited to invite everyone who is a part of Hope to help us expand our sense of community by helping us form small groups.   We'll take a look at how the Bible emphasizes God's plan for us to grow and be healthy through relationships within our spiritual family.  I'll also explain how we do small groups at Hope – which is different than any other church program I've ever seen.  For our small groups to work, we need each of you to embrace our core values of inclusion, teamwork, relationships, and even sacrifice.  We need YOU to help us form the community God calls us to.  So I'm asking for your help – and offering the opportunity to see God's incredible power do unbelievable things as we step forward in faith.

Then, after church, we will be fellowshipping together at our church picnic.  If you signed up to bring food, please remember it.  If you didn't sign up, just bring a dessert or a side to share.  And if you can't bring anything (or forget), just bring yourself!  It looks like it will be a great day for a picnic, and we're going to have great food, and stuff for the kids to enjoy.  Don't miss this!  And invite out some friends. If you've missed seeing someone for a while, this is the perfect opportunity to reach out to them and let them know you're hoping to see them at the picnic.

Monday night is our Young Adults meeting (7:30 at the church).  We just started doing two meetings each month as we explore our faith (and our questions) together.  Dana and I are asking anyone who is a part of Hope and is in the age group (post high school through early thirties) to come out and be a part.  And please bring a friend.

We also have our baptismal service coming up on October 2nd (at 1:30 that afternoon at Calvary Bible Church in Deptford).  If you've received Jesus as your Savior and need to be baptized, please see me to get a copy of the book I need everyone to read.  We will have two classes at my house (6 East Ave, Clayton) on September 22 and 29 at 7 pm.  I need everyone interested in being baptized to plan on being at both classes.  Of course, if you're just exploring this idea, you are welcome to get a copy of the book and come to the classes and then decide if you're ready.

We are about to begin our preparations for the kid's Christmas program this year. The kids will be practicing on Sundays this year.  Practices will begin for the elementary (1st-6th grades) on September 25th.  We're again inviting the 6th graders to join our program to help us make it even better.  Our Toddler and Pre-school classes will be working together and will begin practicing on October 9th.  We all love to have the kids on stage for the program (which this year will be on December 18th), so please make sure they are at church each Sunday to practice so that they can be a part of the program that day.

Ladies, you have a fellowship luncheon on Saturday October 8th.  There is a sign up in the resource room to help with food.  I hope that all our ladies can come out and spend some time together.  Hopefully, the Lord will use an event like this to create some new friendships and to strengthen some long standing ones!

There are a few other things we need your help with.  First of all, we need teams of workers for our Wednesday night kids program for next semester (spring) starting in January.  We'd hate to have to go without a class for lack of workers, so please pray that the Lord will stir in our hearts to step into this chance to reach our precious children.  Also, as we mentioned in August, we need you to be praying about our youth group situation – that the Lord would direct us in the process of looking for a youth pastor.  We also need you to faithfully continue to invest in the ministry of Hope by giving sacrificially and regularly each Sunday so that we have the money to hire another staff member.

The Lord has been at work in our church in ways that really blow me away.  I hope you're noticing it too.  Sometimes, I can feel very overwhelmed with all that is going on.  But then I remember that He is the one doing it!  Dana and I were walking the other day, and she pointed out a hawk that was soaring high above us.  We were amazed that it didn't need to flap its wings for such a long time.  Of course, it was riding the wind currents and using the energy of those winds to power its flight without almost any effort.  I remembered the words of Isaiah about soaring on wings like eagles (or hawks) and I started to realize how we see wind in our lives (or storms) as something to hide from or to run from or to curl up into a ball to protect ourselves from.  But that hawk does something different when the wind comes – it faces the wind – points his face right into it – and then spreads his wings and uses the wind to soar.  It seems to me that God is encouraging us not to be scared in the winds that blow and howl around us.  Instead, He wants us to face into those winds by faith and soar on them.  The only question is whether we will see the winds in our lives as an opportunity to engage our faith, or if we will try to hide from it.

I believe God is calling us to step up as a church this fall.  Don't miss out on what He has in store!

Pastor Mark

Hope Notes 9/8/2011

Dear Friends of Hope~
Fall is coming.  How do I know this?  I know because God is giving me some signs.  The very first of the fall leaves are sprinkled across my backyard like confetti.  The birdbath now has a few golden leaves skittering across the surface every day.  At night the air has just the faintest whisper of cooler temperatures.  All these signs point to a predictable outcome – fall is on the way.  God always gives us signs of things to come; we just don't always pay attention to them!  Sometimes we ignore them on purpose because we don't like what they are pointing to.  Sometimes we simply miss the signs He is trying to give us because we are so involved in our busy lives, or so intent on making sure our plan is unfolding the way we want.  I am making a personal commitment to be mindful of the signs God is placing before me.  I don't want to miss what He has so graciously laid out for me.  How about you?

SUNDAY MESSAGE

9/11 – September 11th Service

It is hard to believe that TEN years have passed since that unforgettable day.  You can probably remember many details from that day, from the unbelievably clear sky, to where you were when you first heard.  Hope is going to take this anniversary and remember together what we learned and what God did through that unbelievable tragedy.  We have the honor of having many who served their country through the military, and through public service such as police officers and firemen.  It is our privilege at Hope to have several of these heroes as part of our church, and a few of them will share their experiences from the terrorist attacks.  But this is not empty remembrance.  We will take a few moments to look at what God can teach us even today through the events of ten years ago.

CHURCH PICNIC
September 18th

It's almost time for our annual picnic!  The festivities will begin immediately following worship.  Get ready for an awesome time of fellowship, games, food, and fun!  Hope will provide burgers, dogs, and beverages.  Sign up in the Resource Room to bring a dish or dessert to share. We will also be looking for some volunteers to help with games.

SMALL GROUP KICK OFF
September 18
Small Groups are vital to the body of Hope.  We are a family and need to stay connected with one another.  Since that's a little hard to do just seeing each other after church or Bible study, we need to get plugged in to a Small Group.  They are just one of the ways in which we can form deeper relationships as we learn and grow together.  We will be discussing and kicking off the group formation process 9/18.

LADIES FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON
Saturday, October 8th 12:00 – 3:00
It's time for our ladies to spend some time enjoying each other's company!  This is our opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, and just reconnect as the women of Hope.  Any "lady" ages 13 and up is encouraged to come.  We will be having a special devotion by Linda Phillips.  Linda is the sister of Joy, our missionary in Africa.  Bring a friend if you'd like and come prepared to be blessed with good food, good company, and a good word!  Please sign up in the Resource Room to let us know if you can bring a dish to share and how many we need to prepare for.  See Liz Johnson or Lois Hartwell with any questions.

PRAYER REQUESTS
Youth Group – Please pray for God to provide the right youth pastor and the right team of people around him.
Kids Ministry Director.  Please pray for God to connect us with the right people at the right time and let Him have His work in all of this!
Young Adults –
Please pray that God would give the young adults here at Hope a heart for our new ministry so that they can grow in the Lord and forge closer relationships with each other.

Help us to remember to pray, Lord. Not just for these specific requests, but "in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Ph 4:6

He is Faithful,
Lois
