Hope Notes 8/26/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

Having missed last week's Hope Notes and worship service due to being away, I can tell you firsthand that I am missing my church family contact!  Just missing one week of worship is enough to get you feeling slightly disengaged from the church body.  It just shows how much we really do need to "……not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another……." (Hebrews 10:25).  Don't kid yourself; it really does matter that we meet together each week to worship and study God's Word!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

8/29 – Charlie Brown's Teacher (Acts 28:23-29)

Maybe you remember those Peanuts specials on TV from when you were a kid.  Each character had their own personality – except for the teachers in Charlie Brown's school.  Whenever they spoke, it didn't sound like a person at all!  There were no words – just sounds!  It seems that the kids all understood the teacher, but we sure couldn't.  That teacher's voice is something like the effect that God's Word was having on the Jews in response to the gospel that Paul preached.  The prophet Isaiah described this response hundreds of years before this moment.  To them, the truth was nonsense.  It sounded to them like the sounds Charlie Brown's teacher made.  They heard the sounds, but it made no sense to them – it had no effect.  As amazing as that sounds, we can be hard hearted as well.  And we need to be sure that we don't reduce the truth to background noise in our lives.

CD'S AVAILABLE
Please remember that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE! Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

 SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME

Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Jim Bradshaw at spaceheadjim@yahoo.com with any questions.

BIBLE READING FOR AUGUST – DEUTERONOMY

If it seems like a lot of the material in this book has appeared in the first three chapters of the Old Testament, it's because it has!  The name itself means "second law".  Remember, the previous generation of Israelites had all died in the desert because of their sin, and the new generation needed to hear the law before they could enter the Promised Land.  It was also important that these people be reminded of what had happened to their forefathers.  If this book has one key thought, it's REMEMBER!

Hope Notes 8/19/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

Had a little reminder from Pastor Mark last night at Bible study.  Let's all be sure to take advantage of these last lazy days of summer and get together with our friends at Hope.  Not just our old friends, but all those newer faces that I call "friends to be".  There's still time for barbeques, swimming, and sitting around the fire pits!  You know how crazy it gets when school starts up again; don't miss this opportunity to connect with our Hope family.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

8/22 – Journey to Rome (Acts 28:11-22)

Life is an unpredictable journey with plenty of surprises and a healthy helping of struggle and hard work.  Each of us has our own journey intertwined with the people God has brought into our lives.  Some are brought for our strengthening and encouragement.  Others are brought for our opportunities to do some eternal good.  We sometimes prefer certain parts of our lives, but we generally don't get to pick and choose what our lives will include.  As Paul completes his journey to Rome, Luke writes about a lot of the details and the people he encounters along the way.  Whatever the specific circumstances of your life, let's ask God to help us see what He is accomplishing in our lives in the journey we take each day!

Hope Notes 8-13-2010

Hi Everyone!

Lois is away, so I'm filling in for the week.  I know I won't do as complete of a job as she always does, but I thought it would be neat to reach out to everyone.  I don't always get that chance, so I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity.

First, let me say a huge "thank you" to our teens and to Chris and Stephanie for their marvelous job last Sunday!  I know so many were blessed and encouraged by the service, and we're looking forward to finding another chance to turn the service over to them.  We are so thankful that the Lord has given us a youth group and for the way God is working in it.  Please pray for our teens and their leaders - we want to do a fantastic job with our young people!!  And while you're at it, extend your prayers to include all our young people's ministries - our little ones, our elementary kids, and even our young adults.  I believe the Lord is pushing us toward finding ways to touch the lives of those young people even more.

Now, as I write this, I notice all the names included in our "Hope Friends".  Some of you I get to see virtually every week.  I am so thankful for your true partnership in the work for God's kingdom.  Your faithfulness and connection to Hope really make our church what it is.  We wouldn't be very effective as a church without all that is sacrificially poured out by you. Others of you are new, and I can't tell you how exciting it is at Hope right now to see all the new faces.  It is a challenge to get to know you all and to get connected with you, but please be patient and hang in there.  I can tell you from personal experience that this group of people is open hearted and warm, and once we catch up to all the new people, you'll be amazed at how God's love pours out from your brothers and sisters in Christ at Hope!

There are some of you that I haven't seen in a while, and I just want to reach out to you and let you know that we miss seeing you and having you around. I know that God takes us from one place to another for many reasons, but if we haven't seen you in a while, please reach out and let me know what's going on!  It is a large challenge for us to welcome so many new people AND keep our eyes on who is missing at the same time.  SO help us out!  If something is going on that we can pray for or help you with - please let us know!  If the Lord has led you elsewhere - that is wonderful!  We don't want to bug you with all that is going on at Hope everyweek, so if you want to be removed from our mailing list, just let us know.  And if you're in a spot spiritually where you could just use some help, we would love to be of any help that we can be!!

I want to again mention the upcoming small groups season.  We'll kick it off on September 12, but I want you all to be praying about who to reach out to and include in a small group.   You can start having those discussions now.  For those of you who weren't with us last year or a part of a small group - we want you included too!  At Hope, we commission our people to create their own small group.  Let the Spirit of God lead you to some other people or couples and put together a group of 8-10 adults.  We provide a discussion sheet for each group, and I'll go into further descriptions of the process on September 12th, but for now, ask the Lord to direct your heart toward someone new, or someone you need to re-connect with, or someone you just need to go deeper with.  The cool thing is that this pulls our relationships into a zone where we discuss our spiritual struggles and allows us to really pray for one another and care for each other.  So don't miss out.  We'll even help you find a group if you feel stuck or confused.  Please don't despair!!  God has amazing things for us this fall in small groups!

Speaking of connecting, don't forget about the opportunities we have coming up.  Ladies, plan on being at Women of Faith.  If you haven't purchased your ticket - do it right away.  I guarantee you won't regret setting aside those two days and getting filled up with encouragement and challenge from God's Word.  Men, your retreat is also coming up, so if you still need to sign up or make plans, do that right away!  And our teens are planning some big outings too - the Senior High is going to RevGen on Sept 5th, and the Middle Schoolers are going to have a blowout day of fun at FunPlex in Mount Laurel.  Make sure your teen is a part of that!

As I close, let me mention a few other opportunities.  This next Wednesday, we'll be getting back to Genesis, so plan to be there.  And we're moving towards a kids program (I really need someone who wants to serve our 2s and 3s on Wednesday nights as we start our kids program!!!), and with our teens, we really have something for the whole family on Wednesday night.  I know the fall is about to hit and there will be plenty of pull for you to do something else with your midweek evening.  But please let me encourage you to make the decision now to invest in each Wednesday night at church.  The long term impact is breathtaking.  Don't get trapped into spending all your time and energy running around and miss out on the chance to build your life spiritually and find refreshment in the middle of each week!

Also, we pray together each Sunday morning, and I want to personally invite all of you to join us.  Now, I know many of you can't make it at 9:15 - and we wouldn't all fit in that room!  But you can pray wherever you are - and you can join us in the room whenever you can!  Take some time each Sunday morning and pray for the service, pray for our workers, and pray the the Lord would do His work that morning in our church!

Thanks so much!  God's love and blessings to you all!
Pastor Mark

PS - Not sure who is on for what, so check your schedules!  Thanks!!

Hope Notes 8/5/10

Dear Friends of Hope~

You have no idea how excited I am for this Sunday! I absolutely LOVE when the teens take over the service.  I know what a blessing it can be and so I don't want anyone to stay home thinking, "Oh it's just a bunch of kids....it will be boring….what could I possibly learn from a teenager?"  Let me tell you – you will be energized, excited, uplifted and encouraged.  You will see God through new eyes.  You will be challenged.  Whatever you do – DON'T MISS IT!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

8/8 – Teen Service

We have a special treat today – our youth group is taking over our morning service.  God has blessed us with awesome youth leaders in Chris and Stephanie Mulder and a group of fantastic teens.  Paul tells Timothy that there is no barrier to ministry just because of his youth, and we'll see that in evidence as our teens minister to us this morning!  Let's allow the power of God to move us today!

CD'S AVAILABLE
Please remember that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE! Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY

7:00-8:15pm
Think the book of Genesis couldn't possibly relate to us and the world in which we live? Think again! Genesis means beginnings and that's just what this book is about. It describes a loving God who made all things perfectly, but also tells about the beginning of sin and how it ruined what had been a perfect relationship between God and man. Isn't that still happening today? Join us as we continue our study on the book of Genesis. Childcare is provided.

GET READY FOR SMALL GROUPS

It may seem far away, but fall really is just around the corner!  And that means it's time to start thinking about Small Groups. We'll be doing them the same way as last year, so you can start thinking of ideas for who to ask and reach out to!  September 12th will be our small group kickoff day.  You don't need to have anything "set" before then, but summer is a good time to reach out to new people, catch up with old friends, and determine who might be a good mix for a group.

FANTASY FOOTBALL

Here we go again!  Hope is having its second annual Fantasy Football contest.  The draft will be held on August 21st at 5:00 pm.  See Jeff Toomin with any questions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

THANK YOU FROM OUR YOUTH

We'd like to thank all those who participated in the youth bake sale. We were able to raise $305. Your donations were greatly appreciated. This money will go towards the cost of the tickets for RevGen.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT KIDS PROGRAM

Want to give your child an opportunity to grow spiritually and have some fun?  Our new Wednesday Night Kid's Program fills the bill!  We hope to have this program up and running from September to December.  In order to do this, we need to find one teacher and one helper for the 2 and 3 year old class.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Jennifer Winstel at 782-7798.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE – THIS FRIDAY

The Red Cross will be holding their Blood Drive here at Hope on Friday, August 6th from 1:00 – 7:00 pm.  Please come out and support the drive by donating.  We need at least 30 donors in order to make it worthwhile for them to come out.

YARD SALE – THIS FRIDAY

Friday August 6th      12:00 – 7:30

Saturday August 7th 7:00 – 12:00

The Lein family is collecting items for a yard sale to be held here at Hope.  Half the proceeds of all sales will go to the youth to help cover the cost of attending RevGen.  All items that don't sell will be donated to Purple Heart.  Please bring your items to church by Sunday August 1st.  Don't forget to come to the yard sale and buy lots of fun stuff!  Contact Becky Lein with any questions:  856-278-2717 or becky.lein6@gmail.com

NOTICE TO PARTNERS

We will be presenting an amendment to our constitution to make the anticipated transition to elders as the leadership of our church.  Hopefully, we'll have that done and presented sometime in the fall.  So we are asking everyone to pray with us as we put down in words what we believe is God's direction for our ministry.  Also, we will be presenting some projects (and the associated costs) that we'd like to undertake in the building now that we own it.  Please pray for God's leading as we consider what to do and when to do it!

HOPES PANTRY DONATIONS REQUEST FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL

This month we are asking for any snack & non-perishable items to pack in lunch boxes.  Need some suggestions?  Peanut butter & jelly, individual packs of cookies, chips, pretzels, or crackers, juice boxes, sandwich bags, napkins, pudding or jello cups, fruit roll ups….you get the picture!

We will be giving these out to a few families at Hope at the end of August!  Thank you for helping make packing lunch a little more affordable for these familes.

See anyone on the Needs Team (Lorraine Otis, Bill Murray, Ken Blythe or Bill Berry) for information. Please be sure to check expiration dates on all items. Thank you!

WOMEN'S CLOTHING

We have some really nice women's clothing in sizes 14-16-18 available for free to anyone who would like them.  There are also some designer labels in there, ladies!  If interested, contact Lorraine Otis at lorraineotis@comcast.net.

RIVER SHARKS TICKETS

Please help us to not have to "eat" the cost of these tickets!  How about purchasing some for a fun night with your family?

There are 18 River Sharks baseball ticket vouchers available, good for any game during their regular season (until mid-September), $13.00 each (includes ticket and food voucher).  First come, first served.  A great family evening to enjoy baseball – every seat is a good one!  See Liz Johnson to purchase.

SAINTS PRISON MINISTRY

The Saints traveling softball ministry is in full swing again!  Their big crusade to Michigan begins in mid-July.  This ministry shares the love of Christ and gives the Gospel message to prisoners across the nation through something as simple as a ball game!  Our own Bill McGinness is once again giving his time to work with SPM.  He needs to raise $950 in support as quickly as possible.  If you feel led to give, just make a check payable to Bill and drop it in the offering box.

HELP NEEDED FOR PRIMARY CLASS

Praise God we now have enough teachers!  We only need one helper for the 3rd-5th grade class.  Please see Anita Little if you can help.

THIRSTY LAMBS

Our precious little lambs are thirsty!  It must be the summer heat that is causing our juice boxes to disappear at an alarming rate. Between Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, they just fly out of here!  Donations of juice boxes (any clear/light colored juice) would be greatly appreciated. You can give the juice to Franne Harkin or put it in the pantry clearly labeled for "CHILDREN'S MINSITRY".

If you want to be a part of this ministry, send Jim your email address and he will add 9:15 on Sunday mornings whether they are on the team or not.

Dave Bolser – For his sister, Kathy, who is undergoing further brain surgery Friday morning.

Dwight Lein – For God's provision and direction as Dwight begins a job search after being laid off.

Help us to remember to pray, Lord. Not just for these specific requests, but "in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Ph 4:6
