Hope Notes 2/25/16

Dear Friends of Hope ~

There are seven days in a week and 'someday' isn't one of them!  Don't we always say things like, "I'll get to it someday"?  I don't want to keep putting off till someday the things I need to attend to today! Ephesians 5:15-16 tells us 'Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.'   In other words, we need to take care in how we walk with Jesus and use the time we have on this earth wisely.  To break it down even further, we need to simply take each day and use our time in the best way possible.  What ARE the best ways?  Well, I would say whatever deepens our relationship with the Lord and furthers His kingdom.  Take time each to read the Bible and spend time in prayer.  If we have an opportunity to witness to someone, do it! We need to make attending church a priority.  God calls us to fellowship with other believers.  We need to be fed so that we have a firm foundation on which to stand when times are tough.  We can't give to others what we ourselves don't have.  That's why all these things are so important. Remember, God created the world in seven days and you can be sure that 'someday' was not one of them!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

2/28– God's Sense of Humor (Esther 6)

Many picture God as an angry, kind-of-grumpy, old man.  Others see Him as a great big heart that is mushy and soft.  But God is much more complex than any of our cartoonish ideas of Him. In fact, as we read the stories in the Bible, we sometimes get a glimpse into His humor!  As we read this story, we'll notice that God clearly knows how to inject a note of levity into very serious matters.  And underneath it all, He is reaching to those who reject Him and watching over those who are His!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE

Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

8:40 – 8:45 for Both Services

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME

8:30 – Prayer Room
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  Questions?  See Bob Baumiester.  "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:20

Hope Notes 2/18/16

Dear Friends of Hope ~

How do we react when life throws us a curveball?  It could be a minor inconvenience like an unexpected glitch in our plans, a day that goes awry when things don't go as planned, or when unforeseen events interrupt the flow of life. Or it could also be a life altering bombshell – a diagnosis no one wants to receive, the news that a loved one has died, or the loss of a job and all the income it provides.  Unfortunately, any number of things can blindside us at any time.  Lest you think I'm all doom and gloom, let me just say that curveballs can also be wonderful thing.  An engagement, the birth of a new baby, or an out of the blue piece of good news!  But those kind of things don't usually throw us for a loop.  We simply accept them and rejoice.  It's what we do when the curveball affects us negatively that matters.  Since scripture tells us to 'give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus' (1Thess. 5:18), I'm going to assume we need to readjust our reactions a bit.  There's no way I could get into a whole discussion on the hardship of giving thanks in difficult situations in a Hope Notes opening, so let me just focus on one thing.  We know that God always has our best in mind.  We know that He will never leave us or forsake us.  So perhaps we should try and react with PRAISE not panic!  We can praise Him for what He's already doing in the specific situation.  We can't always see it; that's where faith steps in.  Instead of ranting over our 'messed up' day, let's offer Him praise for being in control of it and allow Him to guide us through it.  I find He often turns my day upside down and then offers me the chance to serve Him or be a blessing to someone else instead.  For those heart stopping, gut wrenching situations we can still offer Him praise that He is our Father, that He loves us, and that He's still on the throne.  We don't know what will happen, but thankfully He does.  It's a simple catchphrase – Praise not Panic – so let's try and repeat it to ourselves as needed.  Which sometimes may be more than once a day, lol!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

2/21 – A Self-Centered View (Esther 5:9-14)

We hear a lot about self-centered people and how awful it is to be around someone like that.  But what does it mean to be 'all about you'?  And what if it turns out that every one of us struggle with seeing life through a self-focused view?  Haman is the villain in the story of Esther, in large part because he is selfish.  But as he interacts with his family over the way he's treated, we can see the common ways that self-centered living creep into our experience and color everything we see. As followers of the One who laid down His life for us, we want to choose to push away Haman's way of seeing and talking about his life, and embrace the way Jesus lived selflessly.

Hope Notes 2/11/16

Dear Friends of Hope ~

I am so excited for our Teen Service this Sunday!  Those of you who know me are aware of my fondness for this special day.  I absolutely love the energy they bring!  Giving our teens a platform on which to share their blossoming faith is a precious privilege.  They put so much of themselves into everything they do, whether it's sharing a testimony, a skit, or their musical talents.  I can 'boast in the Lord' that Hope is a church that values our young people and believes in allowing them to have this chance to minister to us. Often we adults miss the opportunity to have our youth lead us.  This is such a shame, because they can be a real blessing to us!  How can we expect them to live out the counsel in 1Timothy if we don't show them we believe in them? Come and be blessed this Sunday as God gives us a glimpse into the hearts and minds of our teens!

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." (1Timothy 4:12)

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

BECOMING WHO YOU ARE

Life is often about fulfilling roles. There are family roles; husband, wife, oldest, youngest, middle. There are roles at work; owner, supervisor, employee, co-worker, etc. There are even roles in social circles; the comedian, the encourager, the reliable one, etc. These roles that we all fill can be earned or given. Regardless of how or why you've obtained a specific role, once you've assumed it you're expected to fulfill it. There are expectations of behavior and actions, when these aren't met they are appealed to. "You're the father, now act like it!" The Bible says that we are the bride of Christ

(Eph 5), a new creation (2 Cor 5:17), and dead to sin (Rom 6). Our lives may not always reflect the roles the Bible has given us. So how do we become who the Bible says we already are?

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

FEBRUARY CHALLENGE VERSE

Psalm 30:4-5

"Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.  For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning."

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY

7:00 pm

We're starting a 5-6 week study on what the Bible has to say about the end of the world.  We'll be looking at books like Revelation and Daniel as well as many other passages in the Bible. Our topics will include the tribulation, the rapture, heaven and hell, the Second Coming, as well as Jesus' rule on earth as King.  Since there are so many different ideas about what the Bible says, we'll try to talk them through a little.  This won't be a comprehensive study for experts; instead it will be more of a survey for everyone which can give you the ability to dig deeper into study for yourself!

YOUNG ADULTS

7:30 in Youth Room

First and Third Monday of every month

Anyone who has graduated high school up to their early thirties is welcome. See Pastor Mark or Dana for more information. Childcare is provided.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWSHIP

SMALL GROUPS

Small Groups are a fantastic way to connect on a more intimate level with the body of Hope.  It's never too late to join a group, or even to start up a new one!  Check out our Small Group Bulletin Board next to the Prayer Room.  More details on Hope's small groups can be found on the yellow info sheets in the Resource Room. Study sheets can be picked up in the Resource Room or downloaded directly from our website. See Damon Briggs with any questions or contact him at damon.briggs@mitchellandness.com

GOD'S GIRLS WOMEN'S GROUP

Mondays at 7:00

The Bible tells us we are wonderfully made - but why do our emotions seem so complicated? That's what we'll be talking about as we resume meeting this Monday.  We will begin studying Patsy Clairmont's book, "I Second That Emotion." Join us as we learn what makes us tick, and how God

wants us to respond to the crazy emotions we all share. Signup sheets are in the lobby, or contact Mary Lebeau (316-6301/marylebeau@verizon.com) for information.

MEN'S BREAKFAST

Second Saturday of Every Month

8:00 – 9:30am

Come and join us for a delicious breakfast and a good time of fellowship/sharing with the men of Hope.  Feel free to bring a friend!  Open to men 18 and older. See Steve Jones with any questions.

NEW FAMILIES CAKE n COFFEE

Friday, February 19th @ 7:30pm

If you are new to Hope, or maybe you missed our last fellowship back in June, you'll want to mark your calendars now for this event!  Bring your family and come enjoy some coffee and dessert with us.  We want to get to know you better and it's kind of hard on a busy Sunday morning!  Please sign up on the signup sheet located in the lobby so that we know how many to prepare for.  See you there!

SPRING CAFÉ

Wednesday, March 2nd @ 7:00 pm

Looking forward to our Spring Café, and not just because 'spring' is in the name!  This is always a great night of fellowship – watching performances, snacking on good food, and just enjoying each other's company.  We'll need performers and people to sign up to bring a snack or dessert.  Signup sheets are in the lobby!

Hope Christian Fellowship is sending a team to Uganda to work alongside the Josh & Kelly Hallahan this July!  Dave Hallahan, Jim Jefferson, Anne Jefferson, Jess St.Petery and Patti Tomasetti will be raising funds over the next several months before heading to Uganda from July 8-22. The cost is about $3,200-4,000 per person. There will be several fundraisers coming your way over the next couple of months. In the meantime, the team would appreciate your prayers!  If you would like to and are able to donate to their trip you can do so by visiting their GoFundMe page. https://www.gofundme.com/83hyz9rg.                                                                               ANNOUNCEMENTS

JANUARY GIVING REPORT

We averaged $6007 per week for the month of January.  This is well behind the annual weekly giving target for 2016 of $6700 and reflects the week we had to cancel church.  Please pray with us as we look for God's providence through His people to 'catch up' in the coming months!

PAINT NITE - UGANDA FUNDRAISER

Saturday, March 5th @ 7:00 pm
I wanted to make all three of you aware of a fundraiser we are planning for the Uganda mission trip. March 5th we will have a Paint Nite fundraiser at the church. It will be $30/person which includes admission to the event, a canvas, and painting materials. All proceeds will go to the Uganda mission team.

CALLING ALL TEACHERS

If you are someone who has taught adults (especially in church settings), Pastor Mark would like to invite you to a brainstorming session for Hope.  We will be meeting on Wednesday night, March 23 at church at 7:00 pm and discussing ideas on how to maximize the teaching gifts we have in those God has brought to be a part of Hope.  Our elders will take the input and look for God's leading in any new or improved teaching forums for our church!  Any questions, see Pastor Mark.

CHOICES OF THE HEART BABY BOTTLES

Are you remembering to put your change into your Choices of the Heart baby bottles? You can even keep it simple by writing a tax deductible check made payable to Choices of the Heart and slip it into the bottle.  As women see their babies on the free ultrasound tests, the percentage who choose life is remarkably increased. Save the babies!  Fill your bottles and return by March 6th.

UPCOMING BAPTISM

Wednesday, March 9th @ 7:00 pm

Pastor Mark will be having two classes at his house on February 22nd and 29th (both Mondays) for anyone interested in being baptized.  Classes last about an hour.  You need to plan on being at both classes if you intend on getting baptized. There is a signup sheet in the lobby; Pastor Mark also has a book and an information sheet for each person.

ENVELOPES FOR DESIGNATED GIVING

Sometimes, God lays it on our heart to give a little extra for His kingdom.  He may have provided the financial means for it or just the nudge in our hearts.  In order to help make this easier for you as the giver and Hope as the receiver, we have some envelopes in a wall mounted bin next to our regular offering slot.  If you'd like to give to a special project or ministry, just use one of these envelope and check off the correct category.  Please note that these envelopes are not for your usual Sunday offering.

ONLINE GIVING OPTION

It's easy and convenient!  Simply go to our website and click 'Online Giving'.  You have the options to set up recurring donations (like automatic bill pay), or give one time donations as well.  The amount and frequency are up to you.  This will allow many of us to be intentional and faithful in our support of Hope.  Contact Damon or LaTosha Briggs with any questions.

HOPE 4 RECOVERY

Tuesdays at 7:00 pm

Are you ready to let go of strongholds?  Have you tried and tried on your own with no success?

Hope for Recovery is a Christian based, 12-step approach for those struggling with addictions of any kind.  The group is a safe and confidential place for men and women to find strength and HOPE through sharing and fellowship.  We meet in the 1st/2nd grade classroom.  Enter through the rear doors. Contact Hope4Recovery@yahoo.com with any questions.

HAVE OUR ELDERS PRAY WITH YOU

The New Testament has this wonderful ministry for the elders of a church - PRAYER.  And we'd like to offer it to anyone who is in need of healing (physical or otherwise) or who needs the power of God to be at work in their lives in a special way.  If you or anyone you know would like to take advantage of this ministry, contact Pastor Mark to set up a time after one of our Sunday services for the elders to pray over you.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

CONNECTING AND SERVING AT HOPE

There are so many places to connect and serve here at Hope.  Keep your eyes on this section to be aware of all the different opportunities for you to effectively serve at Hope. There truly IS 'something for everyone' and we want to make it easy for you to know all the different options!

NEW DIRECTORY

We will soon begin putting together a new directory for Hope - God has grown our congregation and we need to keep up!
