Hope Notes 6/27/13

Dear Friends of Hope~

The other day I was in my car when one of those tremendous summer storms hit.  You know the kind…………where they sky is black, the wind is blowing the car around, you can't see through the rain, and the lightning strikes look like they're right on top of you!  It was one of the few storms where I can honestly say I was afraid.  It made me think of the disciples when they were in the boat with Jesus (Mark 4:35-40).  How much worse it must have been to be on the water when all this was happening!  I can't even imagine it.  I like to think that, if I had Jesus sitting with me there in the car, I would not have been afraid.  After all, He is JESUS.  But then I realized I DID have Him with me; I just couldn't see Him.  And I was afraid, just like the disciples.  I will say that I basically prayed my way home that day; I knew I needed God's hand over me to get me home.  And He did.  Next step of faith is to remember not to be afraid and simply pray!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

 June 30 – Is He Coming? (2 Peter 3:1-7)

Have you ever been parted from someone you love dearly?  Doesn't your heart ache to be reunited with them?  The minutes seem like hours and the time just seems to drag by.  For Christians, we live with the promise that Jesus is coming again.  It has been about 2,000 years since Jesus left this earth with a promise to return, and it can seem to many like that promise is never coming true.  In fact, there are those in our world who would like to use the delay as proof that He is never coming back – that His words were just empty promises.  But Peter tells us that Jesus' return is as sure as ever, and reminds us that we should live like He's coming very soon.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

9:30 – 9:35

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 9:30 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We start at 9:15 am in one of the classrooms. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! Contact Pat Harkin at Prayer Team with any questions.

Hope Notes 6/20/13

Dear Friends of Hope~

By now you all know that I love our Communion Service.  I grew up Catholic and had communion given to me every Sunday by a priest.  We weren't allowed to touch the wafer back then.  Then, after I became a Christian, I attended a church where we went up to the altar rail to kneel and were served communion by our pastor.  This took a long time since we went up row by row.  When I came to Hope it was such a different feel.  Everyone standing in a circle, a real sense of community, no first and last, all waiting together to partake.  I liked being able to scan the crowd and pray as I waited.  It's a little more difficult now – we have so many people that we all have to squeeze in super tight and I definitely can't scan the crowd and pray for everyone as I wait!  But the feeling is still the same and it makes communion at Hope continue to be a very special time.  PS:  Don't forget that we will not serve communion on Saturday evening.

SUNDAY MESSAGE

SATURDAY NIGHT SERVICE

COMMUNION SERVICE (Sunday Only)

June 23 – The Chains of Freedom (2 Peter 2:19-22)

We live in a free country.  At least that's the description that is repeated over and over again.  And politically, that may be true.  But how free are we spiritually?  Is spiritual freedom the ability to do or believe anything you want to?  If it is, then we as a nation are truly free!  But Biblically, being free is an entirely different condition.  It does not have as much to do with self-determination and free-will as with leaving spiritual bondage behind.  And once someone is offered this kind of freedom, does it make any sense for them to turn back to what had enslaved them before?  In our passage today, Peter talks about how people are promised freedom only to find themselves back in chains.

Hope Notes 6/13/13

Dear Friends of Hope~

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling." Psalm 68:5 There are many different situations between children and their earthly fathers.  Some may have never known who their father was, some have been adopted, some have wonderful relationships with their Dads, some grieve the loss of their fathers, and some may have been mistreated emotionally or physically by their fathers.  I love this verse because it reminds us that God is our heavenly Father and we can call Him Abba Father. This is an Aramaic word which is most closely translated as "Daddy".  It signifies the close, intimate, trusting relationship between a child and their father.  So, no matter what we have experienced on earth with our fathers, we can know for certain that we have a heavenly Father we can trust implicitly and who loves us even more than our earthy fathers!

SUNDAY MESSAGE

June 16 – Wise Investments (Luke 19:12-26; Luke 20:9-16; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

If you are someone who keeps track of the financial markets, you recognize the risk that comes from investing in them!  One day they are up, and the next they are down.  Then there are the dramatic downturns that come.  It would be nice to be able to invest in something we know will bring a great return!   Spiritually, we are investing every day.  On this Father's day, our dads have a calling to invest in many places.  But which ones are priorities?  And how can we pattern our lives so that we are investing in the right places?  We're going to take a look at a couple of parables in Scripture and then talk about some simple steps that can keep us engaged in the right investments and help us let go of the stuff that gets in the way.  And we actually do know in this case that everything we invest in the kingdom of God will have an infinite rate of return!  What could be better than that?

COMING UP:

Next Saturday evening service is June 22nd.

If you didn't get to be a part of our Small Groups this past term, don't despair! We are doing a Small Group Sampler on the first 3 Wednesdays of August.  The groups are open to anyone who wants to participate, whether you've been in a group previously or not.  Simply sign up and you will be assigned to a small group for whatever Wednesdays you are available. The deadline for signing up is Sunday, July 14th, so that we can make sure we have a plan that includes everyone and gives us time to get that plan to all the group members in time for the first small group.  Signup sheet is in the lobby.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SAINTS PRISON MINISTRY

Were you aware that we have our own prison missionaries right here at Hope?  Bill McGinness, along with Anne and Jim Jefferson, are actively involved in the Saints Prison Ministry.  Their mission is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners through athletics and to provide them with opportunities for spiritual growth.  The Saints compete against inmate teams in softball, basketball, soccer and women's volleyball, and then present the Gospel to them right on the playing field.  They need to raise their own support in order to participate in this ministry.  Please consider helping them out with your prayers and any financial contribution you can give.  Current needs are: Bill McGinness is $950, Jim Jefferson $850 and Anne Jefferson $350.  Checks should be made payable to the individual.

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE

GREETERS NEEDED

Are you the friendly sort?  We're looking for a few people to 'meet & greet' everyone as they come in the doors of Hope.  It's an easy way to get plugged in and serve.  If you're interested, contact Deb Caranci at fcaranci@comcast.net.

YOUNG ADULT CHILDCARE

We are in need of 1 or 2 people who are willing to provide childcare for our Young Adults meetings. This group has been growing like crazy and being able to provide babysitting is a wonderful way we can support and encourage them in their journey of faith. We have rotating teams right now, but need a little more help so each team only needs to serve 1x every 6-8 weeks. Please see Dana Ott or email her at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org for more information if you are interested in helping out.

VBS – COLOSSAL COASTER WORLD

July 15th – 18th

Can you believe it's time to start thinking about VBS already?  There will be plenty of different options and opportunities to help. More information will be coming.  Contact Anne Jefferson at annemarie523@juno.com if you'd like to volunteer to be a part of this exciting program for our children.  There is a signup sheet in the lobby.

FOOD PANTRY

We are in need of the following items for our pantry:

Non-refrigerated beverages such as juices, Snapple, or water.  No soda please.

Ground beef, hot dogs, meat, poultry, french fries, etc. for the freezer.

See Karen Jones with any questions regarding the pantry.

Please remember to check the expiration dates and leave all donations in the basket located outside the kitchen door.

Kids Ministry Director - Please pray for God to connect us with the right people at the right time and let Him have His work in all of this!
