Hope Notes 12/10/14

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Since it's Christmas time, and since we've all been shopping for presents to give our loved ones, I am thinking about wrapping!  I am an old fashioned girl.  I like packages wrapped in paper with real ribbons.  Some people prefer a pretty gift bag stuffed with colorful tissue.  Some like plain brown paper decorated with holiday stamps. Whatever makes the present pretty!  But how about YOU?  How are YOU wrapped?  John Ruskin quipped, "A person all wrapped up in himself makes a very small package."  I thought that was such a good quote!  It immediately made me think of the verse in 1Peter that tells us to 'clothe ourselves in humility'.  So we can glean a couple of things from this.  First, we need to not be wrapped in ourselves – in other words – do not be self focused or selfish.  Second, what we need to be wrapped in is humility.  A humble spirit - gentle, courteous, respectful, soft-spoken.  As I type these words, I realize that what is being presented are basically the fruits of the Spirit.  (Take a look at Galatians 5:22 for the whole list)  As I wrap my gifts this season, I will be mindful of the way I am wrapped and what I am wrapped up in.  I want any sparkle and shine I have to be a reflection of our Lord and Savior, not just a fancy decorated package!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

December 14 – SHEPHERDS (Luke 2:8-20)

Cantata

Have you ever completely surprised someone you love with the perfect gift?  What does it do to your heart to watch them go from utter surprise to unrestrained joy?  If we could accomplish this more often, gift-giving would be irresistible.  The unexpected has power to stir the deepest parts of us.  As we roll through another Christmas season, we forget that this was a huge and stunning surprise to multitudes of people.  People who were in the dark (literally and spiritually) were suddenly stunned with overwhelming light.  Our familiarity with the story and the experience should not blunt this important element of the story.  The birth of the Messiah and King would be announced to shepherds in a field and direct them to go to a stable to find a baby in a manger.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Did you know that Sunday's worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark's messages are also available on our website, www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

9:30 – 9:35

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray - but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you're scheduled to be in kids' ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 9:30 sharp to pray together for God's power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let's come together each Sunday to ask for God's Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME
Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone from 9:15 – 9:45 am in the Prayer Room. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!

PRAYER REQUESTS

Second Service – We're targeting adding a second service sometime during the first three months of 2015.  Lots of planning and work to do to make this possible.  Please pray for God's leading, provision, and strength!

Financial Projects – We have two big needs for 2015.  Looking at approximately a $15,000 cost to change from oil to gas in order to save thousands of dollars each year.  We also need to replenish our emergency fund of $10,000 (we used almost all of that to address vandalism and theft issues this past year).  Please pray as we ask the Lord to provide funding in both of these areas.

Children's Christmas Program – Let's keep all the children, their parents, and the helpers in prayer as they prepare; it's a big job but it has a big result!

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." Ephesians 6:18

Wrapped in His Loving Arms,
Lois
